A New House and Something's Already Broken...

And that something would be ME. If you didn't catch my Instagram post over the weekend I am officially (and very unfortunately) on crutches. For the next 6 weeks I will be moaning and groaning about this because I can't even believe it's happened. My back/hip area was hurting prior to vacation but I thought I'd just pulled a muscle or something with all the packing and moving. While on vacation the pain got increasingly worse though and started shooting down the back of my leg so I knew I needed to get it checked out.

Two doctor appointments, an x-ray and an MRI later we have found the culprit. This is the actual dialogue that happened between my doctor and I when he walked in to see me after reviewing the MRI:
Me- Okay, is it bad news?
Dr- Well. Are you sure you didn't fall? Get in a car accident?
Me- Nope, why?
Dr- You have a freaking fracture in your sacrum. (Said incredulously)
Me- Um, my what?

Your sacrum is the bone at the base of your spine and mine is apparently fractured. My doctor truly couldn't believe it but he said it certainly explains the pain I've been in. We really don't know how it happened since there hasn't been a specific incident, but sure enough it's there. My treatment is to stay off of it for 6 weeks and I'll likely do some physical therapy after that. He's also going to have the doctor who specializes in spine injuries follow up with me and possibly do another MRI. That freaks me out a little, but I'm trying to trust that everything will heal up okay.

If I'm being honest here, this news really crushed me. I know there are certainly much worse things in life but right now this feels like the worst possible news I could get. I have been looking forward to this summer for quite some time now. I've been so excited to get our house in order and to enjoy this summer with T but crutches are obviously going to put a damper on that. So yeah, some tears have been shed over the situation but all I can do is take the recovery one day at a time. Seriously, please pray for my sanity as I stay cooped up inside for half the summer :(

Thanks to those of you who have already reached out with kind words of encouragement, and for the sweet flowers and goodies that someone sweet dropped off for me. It made the crappy news (and pain!) so much easier to bear. Six weeks- let's do this.

  2. Oh friend, I can totally understand the tears. You go ahead and cry and wallow and get it all out at the beginning because pretending this anything but tough is a lie and not worth the fake. I find that taking stock of the situation, wallowing and then accepting is quite helpful and hope it gets that way for you too. Things will get done, slowly than you want, but they will get done and lil T will learn patience at a very early age ;)! Love you!

  4. Oh that's awful! Can you still go swimming? Kind of just float in the water? That might give you some relief and some sun! I hope you heal fast!

  6. OH girl. I spent the majority of last summer on crutches, and then in a boot, AND the summer before in a boot. It's such a bummer. I am so sorry!

  13. I'm so sorry to hear this! Praying for you - for quick healing, lots of rest and taking it easy while being a mama to a busy boy. Rest up and let other people help you. I know both are easier said than done. Thinking of you.

  15. This is such a bummer! I am so sorry. I hope the pain goes away quickly and that T behaves while you're on crutches! :) That pic of actual distance vs. on crutches is so true. I broke my ankle in college (Penn State) and had to use crutches to get back to my apartment off campus. I think that caused more pain than the ankle!

  16. Oh no!! I broke my collarbone last year and it was a six week recovery too and I wasn't even on crutches but MAN it was tough!!!

  17. So very sorry friend. That's rough. I can't imagine "chasing" a little one around on crutches or attempting to organize a new home. If you can, take this time to rest and be still (read, pray, listen to encouraging music, read with T, snuggle on the couch, sip yummy drinks...etc. I'll pray for quick healing for you!

  18. Hang in there!! You're totally allowed to mope about this, but I guess good attitudes usually do get us through things better... sounds like you're off to a good start with that. What a crazy thing to come up out of the blue! I still feel like I have some weird sacral/pelvic bone things left from pregnancy, as things really shift and stretch, so I wonder if they'll find it's some sort of pregnancy stress on your body that is finally making itself officially known... Hope you have some shade in your new yard - set up a playpen in the grass to contain T and you can both sit out!

  20. This is so sad, especially since you posted about how you were all pumped up to lose some weight! I'm really sorry, but hopefully it won't be as bad as it sounds like it will be. That's so crazy it happened and you don't know what caused it!
