NEW HOME: Outdoor Living

Something Jared and I are looking forward to is having an awesome outdoor living area to enjoy at our new house. While we had an okay backyard at our previous house, it was an odd shape and we really just didn't utilize it like we could have. Our new house will have a small-ish, flat yard with a deck and no neighbors right behind us, yay! That was a huge selling point for us when we picked out our lot so I look forward to spending lots of time back there this summer and fall.

As always, when I search Pinterest I had to type "outdoor living space" but then quickly realized the need to add the words "on a budget" because.... shew! I don't know who Pinterest thinks I am, but we will not have outdoor flatscreens, (Jared wishes) double grills built into stone or a waterfall into a pool. I just needed some good inspiration though and I think I found some!

I absolutely love this before and after. This blogger did this makeover with mostly thrifted things and it's just adorable. I am all about some cozy seating and some fun lights to add to the atmosphere. She did buy her string lights from Target and I plan on getting these from Urban Outfitters. I fell in love with them last summer and never pulled the trigger on them but for about $30 I think I will this time!

I'm not super picky on the furniture, just something affordable but still comfy and durable. That shouldn't be too hard, right? ;) I go back and forth on if we'll actually put a table/chairs set out there or just do lounging furniture like couches. I like the idea of a high-top table for two, and then maybe a couch for additional seating? Then again if I just got this mega couch below I wouldn't need anything else, haha!

MEGA COUCH!!!

We'll have other outdoor projects and things to do right away, too. Like deciding what kind of fence to put up and where to plant a couple of trees. I know absolutely nothing about choosing trees for a yard, but we want to complete that project quickly so they can get growing. So sure, while an outdoor living space isn't exactly a top priority, it's definitely something I am getting excited about. It feels like an area I can kinda' just go crazy with and that is what makes it so fun. Orange furniture, anyone??

Anyone want to show off their outdoor party area? Give me some suggestions or ideas?? :)

  1. We have a screen porch with no furniture. I want a couch, chair and coffee table but everything is SO expensive. It's crazy! I'm hoping maybe it'll be my Mother's Day present but that is not likely, haha. We also have a deck with some old furniture that I'd like to upgrade. I'd also love a permanent fire pit. That's not too much to ask, right? ;) Can't wait to see what you decide!

  2. That was quite the make over! I haven't even considered what kind of outside space we are going to have out at our land outside of the 6 acres, lololol! Oh goodness, now you have me thinking.

  5. I love having a nice outdoor space. It's my goal in our new house to make the outside area as cozy and comfortable as possible. I already have lights picked out and possible some new furniture.

  6. Love that before and after. And you absolutely need to get those lights!!! Twinkle lights or strand lights make any back yard look like a fairy tale! Our back yard is on a hill right now and while it is nice and big and fenced in....you cant do a darn thing with it. I hate it. We have a deck out back with a table and four chairs and I do like to sit out there and eat or drink and have the table. But I wish we had more space because I also want a couch and some more comfortable chairs as well. So I suggest having both a table/chairs and lounge area. TJ Maxx and At Home sell affordable pieces to have both. Heck, even Walmart has stepped up their outdoor game.

  9. This is awesome! Our new house has 3 outdoor living spaces (upstairs deck, downstairs patio and a front porch) and we only have furniture for the deck. I needed some ideas for the patio, and I'm thinking that mega couch would suit the space just fine. Love seeing your ideas for your new house, especially since its something I can relate to!

  10. If Jared does want outdoor screens, you can make it happen on a budget. Scour websites for deals (stlmommy posts a lot). Projectors and screens are not bad priced nowadays. Just a thought!

  12. That mega couch!!!! I need that haha! Also, definitely loving that before and after...so nice! We did without patio furniture, other than a cheap patio table and chair set from my college apartment, but finally just bought a "lounging set" on Amazon that should be delivering today! It was actually reasonably priced compared to all the other sets we've been looking at. Can't wait to see what y'all do with your outdoor space!!!!

  13. We are adding on to our porch right now for this same reason - to have a nicer space outside! We're just sticking with our table and chairs, but I got all new cushions. It will be nice! Can't wait to see what you do!

  17. We love our yard and back patio! We LIVE out there in the nice weather! Outdoor furniture can be SO expensive! Like significantly more than we paid for our nice, living room furniture! We got a set at WalMart last year and have been really happy with it! Have fun!
