Games We Play

Jared and I are board game and puzzle people. That is no secret around these parts. I have always loved games and I'm so glad Jared enjoys them too. I loved them growing up and remember constantly begging my sister to play games with me. I also seem to remember her quitting halfway through the games ALL the time because she would get bored. (Hi, Brittney!) Once on my birthday I got a new board game. Littlest Pet Shop board game to be specific. My mom made Brittney promise to play an entire full game with me and I was ecstatic. Brittney was not. There is photographic proof of this very game and how fun it was:

But I'm getting off topic. Basically- I love games! The other day Emily mentioned Dutch Blitz on her blog and I had to politely let her know I am the reigning champion of that game. Someone introduced me to this game probably 6-7 years ago and it's one of the craziest card games ever.

Rummy is of course a classic card game, but one we love to play. We actually have a running tally of our game, we just play when we feel like it whether it's one round or seven rounds and continue to add to the score. We're racing to a million. No, seriously- we are playing a 1,000,000 point game and I can't wait to see who wins this one! We've had our tally going for about three years now.
Yep, we even play with the power goes out! ;)

Monopoly, Clue and Sequence are other classic favorites of ours, and ones we like to break out with our best friends whenever we have a game night. It's even better if your Monopoly is Disney-themed and/or your Clue is the one from The Office ;) It makes things a little easier when you lose or the games get heated. Aka- every single game.

A game we no longer play? Jared and I have spent many a date-night's playing Battleship, a game I regrettably got him one year for Christmas. You guys... I cannot beat him. At BATTLESHIP. I mean, isn't a lot of this game just up to chance?? Why can't I win?? Why can't I even come close to winning?? I have boycotted this game until further notice.

What are your favorite games to play? What should we add into our game night mix??

  1. I LOVE Scene It and other trivia games, but unless they're in Jarrod's wheelhouse (sports or comics or Star Wars) then I beat him and he hates it, so we don't play often. But it's also hard to find a game that's fun for us and Quinn, luckily as she's getting older they're easier to find. Disney Guess Who, anyone?

  2. Have you played Five Crowns? That's the favorite in our house. There are 5 suits instead of 4. The first round you start with 3 cards and 3s are wild, next hand you have 4 card and 4s are wild, etc. all the way through kings, and the hands are played like Rummy.

The other one is Rummikub, also played like Rummy (sensing a theme here)... but your play with tiles instead of cards and you can rearrange plays to suit your hand. We like the strategy games!

  4. There has been MANY nights of sequence battles in our apartment. When we first started dating we played Scrabble, Sequence and all kinds of card games all the time. It was such a fun time getting to know each other. We tend to get just a lil competitive. You reminded me we need to bust out the battleship set, I think they will be very useful when we move into our new house and are a waiting for cable and stuff.

Have you ever played PIT?! It's so much fun for a big group!

  8. Baha- love your comment about EVERY game night getting heated. You're so right. EVERY TIME!!! ;) but themed games always soften the blow when we nearly lose monopoly to the boys every time.
My faves are obviously Monopoly, Uno, Scattegories, Scrabble, and catch phrase!!

  9. I need to try some of these! Around here we love Scattergories, TriBond, and Mexican Train! Game nights are so fun!

  10. I used to all our beg my family to play monopoly as a kid, it was my favorite game. We used to play card games while we waited for our laundry to run at our old apartment. I miss doing that! Maybe we should start again :) we always play with our extended family though and it's usually heads up (the Ellen game) and cards against humanity because we all have a raunchy sense of humor. Oh, and Yahtzee is a favorite in our family!

  11. First of all, I need to comment on the fact in the first photo you're playing The Littlest Pet Shop game. I loved that game, and to be honest if i knew where it was in the attic I would probably go retrieve it and continue to play it today lol. I also love Dutch Blitz, I was first introduced to it during a Youth Group All-Nighter and it was so much fun. Lately I've become a huge fan of the card game versions of board games because they are SO easy to transport and have in a purse or backpack. Phase 10, Monopoly Deal and Sorry Revenge are my top 3...although it's so hard to choose!

  12. Oh gosh I feel like I don't play games nearly enough - Monopoly and Life were always my favorites! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  13. You guys might really like Monopoly Deal. It is a card game version of Monopoly that doesn't take quite as long, but can get pretty heated. It's a favorite of ours. We also like Catch Phrase, but that is better with a larger group. We've definitely played it with just the two of us though. Not quite the same, but still good for some laughs! Game night is always the best!! :)

  14. Oh where to begin: Qwixx is the best dice game we play right now. It's portable and easy to play with two people! We play Phase 10 and Skip-Bo a lot with the two of us. My family plays Wizard and Five Crowns at every gathering (they are the BESSSSSST). With pairs, we play Hand and Foot which is a rummy game too. And Euchre! With four people of course.

    I reeeeeally love playing games!

  15. It sounds like Jared is cheating in Battleship, if you are asking my opinion. Hahahah! I love games too!!!!!! Chris's favorite is Monopoly. My favorite is probably Life. We have Monopoly for the Xbox and PlayStation and that brings on a whole new level of fun! I have never heard of Dutch Blitz but I will have to check it out. Rummy is a classic favorite in my family as well. I also like Phase 10 and Skipbo.

  16. I am undefeated in Clue with my husband and baby brother. I think my record is like 5110 to 0. I'm so good at it.

  17. Game nights get a little heated at our house, too. Our current favorite is HedBanz. The boys love Battleship, but I don't think we've ever played the full game!

  18. Oh my god the Littlest Pet Shop game - I TOTALLY had that!! We are all about games and puzzles in our house (hello, even a photo of our latest puzzle in my blog post today haha). Sequence, Pitch, and Crazy Gin (I feel like I've only met 3 people in my life that know this one but it's SO FUN) are our favorites!

  19. We love playing board games too! I grew up playing a ton of cards and board games with my mom and sister, and we always had the best time! The one game I refuse to play with Chris is Risk because last time we played him and his friend ganged up on me. Plus that game takes way too much time!

  20. I love board games too!! I had no idea there was an Office version of Clue!!! I miss having game nights and I miss the variety! It seems everyone plays cards against humanity now...I'm a little more old school with Taboo, Monopoly, and Mouse trap! =P

  22. I love playing games!! But Eric hates them, go figure! We had company in town over the weekend (the only friends that can get Eric to play games!) and they introduced us to Nerds... pretty freakin' fun!

  23. I love games too! Whenever I go camping with my grandparents, we play Uno...any kind of Uno - regular, Attack, Roboto, etc. We love Uno! I also really enjoy the Scene It? games, I have four of those - two movie editions, Friends & Twilight...but nobody plays the Friends one with me cuz I tend to win that one all the time.

By the way, the look on your sister's face cracks me right up! Ha, ha!

  25. We are such game people here! We've had Monopoly games going on for weeks and I'm the queen of Clue! We haven't had a game night in so long and I think it's about time we did. -xx Leah || Chasing Texas

  26. Hahahaha....that is SO bizarre that you can't beat him at Battleship! It's totally a luck game! I think you should try it again. ;) You're bound to get him one of these times. I seriously love Clue and I think I'd love The Office version even more. Is it like Dwight in Michael's office with the stapler? Haha...amazing. My very favorite card game is Euchre, but we never have enough people that know how to play to get a game going! Best of luck in the million point game of rummy!

But for realz, Monopoly is AWESOME, although my friends and I have a joke that you can't finish a game without an argument. We got the card game version of Monopoly--still true about the arguments!

  28. Ahh! Clue The Office version. I'm thinking I need to get that for my husband for Christmas next year.... We play Yahtzee pretty regularly. Then Kevin started beating me on every scorecard so I suggested a change of game and we switched to that one with the marbles and the wooden board with holes (forget what it's called)...guess who won? Not me. With friends with like to play The Game of Things and Apples to Apples.

  29. My family loves playing Sequence! I never hear people talk about that game, but we love it! At Christmas time we love Christmas Story Monopoly and I bought Drew National Parks Monopoly recently that's fun too. We just played Qwirkle with my sister and brother in law and loved that too!
