Inside the NFL Combine

Jared and I are adopting more of a "now or never" mentality as we get closer to becoming a family of three. I know we'll keep living our life and life will be AWESOME and we can't wait for this stage of life- but regardless, it WILL be different once we're parents! So why not be a little spontaneous while we still can? That's just what we did this weekend.

The NFL Combine takes places in Indianapolis each year and I have always wanted to check it out since it's just a quick 2 hour drive for us. For you non-football people, the combine is a week-long "audition" for guys who are hoping to get drafted by the NFL in April. You have to get invited to attend the event as an athlete, usually around 300 get chosen to come each year and show off their stuff in front of tons of coaches and scouts from each of the 32 teams.

This year Jared and I were able to snag some last-minute guest passes through work and be up front and center for Saturday's events. So we grabbed some snacks and hopped in the car like the crazy, young kids we are and headed over. I felt pretty VIP after we picked up our official guest passes from the hotel next door. The security in the area was insane! Then it was onto Lucas Oil Stadium (booooo Colts) to watch some of the best up and coming athletes out there. We loved seeing some of our Ohio State guys like Braxton Miller and it was fun to compare guys from all the various teams.

Someone I work with once told me the combine was boring- like watching paint dry but I 1000% disagree with that statement. Jared and I were just yards away from these talented guys who were basically trying out for the job of a lifetime. The whole event felt so reverent and was incredibly organized. There was always something going on to watch and the people running the combine kept all events flowing quickly and smoothly.

Marshall Faulk!
We watched them do the 40-yard dash, broad jump, bench press and quite a few on-field drills for the various positions and honestly the whole day flew. It was probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I'm glad we went! A lot of people might find the whole thing boring but if you're a football lover like us- you'd enjoy it. Next up on our football radar is the draft in Chicago! ;)

  6. That's so awesome that you got to go to the Combine! I know what you mean about wanting to do as much as possible before you become a family of 3 because even though you'll have a lot of fun as a family of 3, it'll be a lot harder to just drop everything and do something spontaneous! Glad you got to cross something off your bucket list and see all of those amazing athletes in action!

  10. I can imagine this being the perfect day out for football lovers, totally not boring! Spontaneous trips will be so hard when you add a baby to the mix so I would totally do what you can before he arrives!

  11. What a fun thing! It doesn't matter how big of a sports fan, or if you even like that sport at all, but saying you went to something some ppl dream of is awesome. I'm not a basketball fan at all but a few years ago someone offered me courtside seats to the NCAA final four we had here in stl and I went BC I could say I have!

PS - I hear the NFL draft in person is awesome!

  15. this is awesome! i hate the yolo phrase as well, but i say it sometimes to be silly because well, it is kind of true hahaha. but this is great, and why shouldn't you do fun stuff like this before you're a family of three?! yes life will be awesome and amazing but you're right, it will 100% change and there is nothing wrong with enjoying the little bit of time y'all have left together just the two of you :)

  16. I"m not into football, but this sounds like fun! And hubby watches the draft every year, and I am always so happy for those guys that get picked up and are crying and hugging their families and stuff. Okay not crying...but ya know. :)

  17. Sounds super fun, for you guys at least ;) and I feel ya on that #yolo mentality and doing as much as possible before baby arrives - I feel the same way about this relocation. Gotta see and do as much in this part of the US while we're here!

  20. First of all, I hate the whole YOLO thing...drives me nuts! Ha!

  21. It's awesome that you took this opportunity. You're so right about soaking up the spontaneous fun with Jared while you still can. I also think the combine is cool! I had the opportunity to cover it a couple years ago for USA Football and I was amazed by the athleticism...and all the celebrities milling around. It happened to be the year that Manti Te'o was there and the big controversy, so there were reporters everywhere! Next time you're in Indy, hit me up! I'd love to treat you both to lunch! :)

  23. How fun!! My husband is a huge football fan so he has introduced me to the combine when we started dating a few years ago. It was on our TV pretty much all weekend. :) I find it very relaxing somehow. It was fun to watch! I'd love to go watch one in person.
