Psst- 85 days!

I wanted to title this post "85 days until Christmas" but I was pretty sure the internet might shut down if someone mentioned that holiday in September, of all months ;) While I have gotten a jump on my shopping I am definitely not ready for that just yet. However, I've been meaning to share one more piece of our little trip to northern Ohio. Come to find out just a quick drive from downtown Cleveland was something totally random and different.

The Christmas Story movie house and museum! It was a fun stop and actually very interesting to hear the history of how it came to be. A guy bought the place on Ebay in 2004. Not just any guy- a huge fan of the movie who had started his own business  "The Red Rider Leg Lamp Company" which made replicas of the famous prop in the movie! Talk about a super-fan, haha!

My dad is about to "SHOOT HIS EYE OUT!!!!"

He spent a ton of money restoring the house to make it look just like the movie and later bought the house across the street to make into a museum- which has actual props and costumes from the movie. Everything is interactive, they encourage you to pick up the props, take photos, etc. Our tour guide told us the owner made back all his money he'd invested within the first month of the house/museum opening. People love a good, cheesy Christmas movie! ;)

We spent a little over an hour seeing this, as it's a quick walk-through- but if you're in the area and/or a fan of the movie it's a fun, unique place to stop in. I always think movie memorabilia is fun and interesting- makes me wonder what other stuff is on display out there around the country that I'd like to go check out?! And now since I've got Christmas on the brain, I gotta' get shopping!

  1. I'm really looking forward to Christmas this year too, but I have a rule about not celebrating too early because I don't want to skip over thanksgiving. My husband is obsessed with A Christmas Story! He seriously watches it every Christmas even if it's not in order. I know that he would have a blast if we visited the original house!

  4. I grew up in the Cleveland area and my mom used to work as a tour guide at the Christmas Story House! Small world! I really enjoy how you can touch and interact everything in the house. It's not very museum like where you have to stay far away from all the items. Glad you enjoyed it!

  6. This looks like a fun and interesting way to spend the day.

Ugh to Christmas being so close though, I said I was going to start early BUT I didn't realize how crazy school is schedule and expense wise. At least K is the only one I have to buy for this year, that makes life a lot easier.

  7. As soon as I saw the title I knew it had to be Christmas!! :) Last night I couldn't stop thinking about the tree and where on Earth we will put it in our new apartment. Big life choices...I know ;)

That picture of your dad "shooting out his eye" cracks me up. Definitely something my dad would have done, too!

  17. I am so stinking excited that Christmas isn't that far away!!! This house would be so cool to visit! Can you believe that last year is the first time I watched the movie in it's entirety?! It wasn't on the list of usual suspects for my family growing up....but Chris likes to play the marathon in the background when it is on.

  22. One of my favorites stops on our vacation to Cedar Point a few years ago! Love that everything there is interactive and you can try on some of the clothes like the bunny suit hat.

  25. I've heard about this from so many people and I've still never been! That movie is, of course, a classic, so I'd love to stop by this place. It's amazing that he made back the money he invested so quickly. I also really love weird roadside attractions like this and I try to find them wherever I travel. My personal favorite so far has been the American Gothic house in Iowa. So hilarious and they let you dress up like the painting for a picture.

  26. 85 days?! What, what...so exciting. :) And someone in my parent's neighborhood totally has the leg lamp up in their front window for all the world to see...all year round. It makes me laugh!
