Getting Back to the Basics

I have really missed writing on paper. Good, quality paper where you just pour your heart out- you scribble things out if you write it wrong instead of hitting a delete button. You draw arrows and lines to connect thoughts if you need to, instead of copy/pasting your text into different areas of a word document. I'm the girl who still keeps a paper planner because I refuse to go digital in that sense. I love paper, pens and the physical act of writing things down. There is never a shortage of colored pen options in my purse. You never know what color you'll need when!

Sometimes when I'm feeling discouraged in the blog world, I think it's truly because I'm not writing... I'm typing. These feelings have almost made me shut down my blog completely a time or two, and sometimes I still wonder if/when I will. While I enjoy blogging, it definitely takes up a good amount of my time. Time that could be spent writing creatively, journaling and really putting my my whole brain down on paper. I've always loved to write and it saddens me when it feels more like a chore, and less like a hobby. Shouldn't it be the other way around?!

So I'm trying to get back to the basics and get back to the days of keeping an actual journal. It's been years since I consistently kept one! There are some things that just need written out for my eyes only-- they don't have to be perfect, they don't have to make sense or even be a coherent thought-- I can just write write write and spill my guts.

I'm obsessed with pretty notebooks and pens, so I recently decided to get myself a MayBook that I've heard so much about. I decided if I needed that push and that reminder to actually write I'd obviously need a new, cute notebook! While I wanted to purchase about 12 of them in advance, I just got one for the time being. And how else would I customize it? Orange and polka dots, it is! Look familiar?

There are legitimately hundreds of ways to customize them. So yes, I'll be buying more. I love the fact that it's a soft, canvas cover- so different from anything else I have. It's also small, just 5x8, so it easily fits in any purse or bag. You can get plain paper or lined paper and they also sell planners, a budget journal (Sallie wants one for Christmas!), meal planners and more!

  5. I'm a big fan of writing things down. When I get writer's block, it's typically from typing. If I move to paper, I'm fine.

  7. I seriously need to keep a journal because there are things that are just too personal to post online. Or bull crap that you can't get into because it's open for the world wide web to see... you know what I'm talking about ;)

  8. I could have written this exact same entry about writing and blogging. I used to be so diligent about keeping a journal and then got out of it but I found a super cute notebook on clearance at Wal-Mart towards the end of the summer and that was the kickstart I needed to start journalling again.

  12. These are adorable! I am the same way, I love writing things down the old-fashioned way! And even better if I have something cute to write on! :) I definitely prefer a paper planner, and I am always writing out to-do lists on paper too!

  20. I don't think I'll ever get away from actually pen to paper writing down my lists.....something so satisfying about crossing off that to do list right?

  21. I am like you too... there is just something about writing things down. I will admit that I do have my calendar digitalized as well... this way Mark and I can link up our calendars through Google and know what we both have going on at all times. BUT that doesn't mean that I don't still use my paper planner like it is my job and that I don't color code EVERYTHING that is in there... and that I don't use my Erin Condren planner for meal planning, lists, etc. There is just something about having it in paper form and being able to check things off lists and just see everything written down!

  22. We are soulmates. Seriously. I am a sucker for a new notebook and writing things down, which I tend to do less and less of these days. Silly technology. I have been wanting a MayBook for awhile and was considering one of their planners for 2015. And I like that yours is orange and brown ;) #woofwoof

  25. I started keeping a paper and pen baby journal because I knew I would write so much more on paper. Though I sometimes forget to write in my planner for a few days at a time, I would be lost without it! The only thing I hate is using spiral notebooks. Yet I haven't found a good non-spiral notebook that I love.

  26. I totally feel you on this. I have been feeling completely uninspired lately. So the other night after dinner I went to Starbucks with a notebook and a pen. I just wrote for over an hour. It felt great!
