A Day Off

Yesterday I got a surprise day off from my work which was AWESOME. I mentioned last week that I'd been working every day for almost three weeks straight and I think my glazed-over eyes were starting to show to my boss. He kindly agreed to let me stay home Monday and it was one of the most productive days ever. Jared doesn't work Monday's, so we were both home to celebrate National Coffee Day together.

You know me, I don't like "real" coffee that actually tastes like coffee so Jared grabbed us both some caramel frappucinos and oh my gosh! 400 calories of deliciousness right there ;) Yes, we worked out afterwards. #necessary

We sat outside sipping our delicious "non-coffees" as I call them and I couldn't get over how fast our leaves have changed! One tree always seems to turn much faster than the others, and this year is no different. It's nice that my favorite color is orange and I get to look at this view out back every day for awhile :) Consider this my obligatory "I love fall" post and accompanying photos.

After getting all jacked up on caffeine, we tackled some much-needed house projects. Decluttering our garage, cleaning out our cars and taking another load of stuff to donate at Goodwill! I mentioned the "bag" last week, but I really think it's already helping us get rid of the unnecessary junk in our house- I love it! Little by little we're reducing our stuff.

Days like yesterday make me really wish I had a more flexible work schedule, or one that involved working from home in SOME form. It's really nice to just have a few more hours at home, and few less hours commuting. How far do you all drive to and from your jobs each day? Typically it takes me about 35 minutes in the morning, and closer to 45 minutes on the way home. I know many people who drive an hour or more to work in bigger cities than I do, and I can't imagine! For everyone's sanity, I'm voting all Mondays become a play at home and clean your house day. Thoughts? ;)

  3. I would LOVE to have Mondays off! I have two kids to drop off at two different places in the mornings, so my morning routine usually takes me and hour and a half from the time I leave the house till I walk into work. One extra day of no rushing around would be amazing!

  4. I wish I had a job where I could work from home some days too. Alas, it's pretty hard to teach from home ha. I have been known to take a day or 2 "off" in the past off just so I can spend the day grading & planning. My commute is pretty similar to yours...about 30 min in the morning & about 45 min in the afternoon. Yesterday it took me over an hour to get home though. Pretty sure everyone on the freeway enjoyed my one woman concert.

  5. I VOTE ERIN AS PRESIDENT ;)!

That's awesome your boss gave you the day off, well done mister boss man. Glad you were able to work at home with Jared and have some fun, fall time too. So nice having the extra time. My commute is the same as yours and I wish I was just a lil bit closer!

  6. My commute usually varies from 10-30 minutes depending on traffic. Right now there's construction, so it's anywhere from 30-45. I will be so happy when the road is done!
My work schedule allows me to be home Monday "day", Thursday mornings, and the other days except Saturdays. It's unusual, but for now it works for having small kids. I can't work from home, but I would like to someday.

  8. Once you find that petition to make Monday's a stay at home day, send it my way and I'll sign it a million times over lol! I'm so glad you were able to be away from work and do what you wanted to get done. Yay!!

  9. I think life would be better both at work and home if everyone had more flex time. I'd be so happy to be home one day a week working - I always get a lot of work done, and to be able to throw laundry in and run the dishwasher for a few minutes here and there? Glorious.

I'm so glad you got to enjoy a day off!

  10. I'm so glad you could take the day off! Way to be productive too!! :) I'd love if Mondays could be like that! It really does help to have a few hours less of commuting a week to get some more things done. During the winter, my work is flexible about me working from home and not trying to drive in bad weather luckily! It takes me about 30 minutes in the morning and 40 minutes coming home. My mom and step-dad drive an hour+ to and from work but they work close by each other so they get to commute together at least!

  11. I'll vote for the Stay at Home Mondays! I take the bus to work so it's about 30-45 minutes between the walking, waiting, riding and then walking again.

  12. Sometimes I wish I could even just stay home a few hours on Monday am to get a few more things done!

  13. I feel bad saying this, but I work Monday through Thursday, so I have every Friday for chores. Although, if I'm being honest, I usually sleep until noon on those days. Oops. I really love the changing leaves, but I always feel so sad when the leaves fall! They never stay on the trees long enough to enjoy them! I'm glad you had a nice day off - you totally deserve it!

  14. Guess I shouldn't complain about my 10-11 minute commute to work! :) Before I married and moved it only too about 8-9 :) ... Mondays off?? > YES!! lol

  15. Yeah it takes me about 35 in the morning and 45-60 on the way home, depending on what time I leave. So glad you got a day off!!! Oh, and I never responded about eating a whole meal of food together. Oops. Let's do dinner next week. I'm free T, W or Th next week. Or I'm free for lunch too those days. :)

  16. Ugh, commutes. That is one thing I definitely love about working in my hometown - a 7 minute drive to work, tops. I am insanely grateful for it everyday. I would have so much more stress and anger in my life if I had to deal with traffic everyday, so all the power to you, girl!

Glad you got an extra day off to relax and get some things done!

  18. oh unexpected days off are the best kind, because you get to accomplish stuff you didn't even know you needed to! my commute is about the same as yours, I definitely wish it was shorter though..

  19. I used to commute an hour to work and an hour back home.... with all of the work I had to do I was getting up at 6:30 am and not getting home until 6:30 pm! Now I live 5 minutes from my office and can sleep in until 7:30 and arrive at the office by 8... I love it! I think Mondays should be stay at home days as well!

  20. Your orange tree is gorgeous!

I'm with you on productive Mondays at home! I'm off on Fridays in the summer and love it! I commute about 30 minutes each way. It's only about 10 miles, but traffic is horrible!

  21. Oh my! Those are such beautiful trees. The colors! AHHH! I miss Fall already.

  22. It usually takes me around 25 min there and back. Not too terrible, really. I do get road rage occasionally when people merge at the last minute, but I'm trying to be better about it.

  23. Weekday day's off are THE absolute BEST!!!

  24. Commuting is the WORST. I used to work in Blue Ash and that drive was 45 - 60 minutes, and before that I commuted into Chicago from the suburbs, 60+ minute drive! So thankful for a new job in Milford less than 15 minutes away. It spoils you into not wanting to consider other job opportunities that are farther away, though!

  25. Yes, please!!! I would love to be able to stay at home Mondays! It would be fabulous! It takes me about 45 minutes to an hour to get to work every day and about 40 to 45 minutes to get home. On the weekends it would only take 30 to 35. I try to use that time to just jam out to some tunes and keep my cool the best I can haha. It's a lot easier when I get off the interstate and start winding up the back roads to my house. Especially when our trees start looking like yours! Jealous!

  26. My commute has been the trade-off for greater flexibility...when I'm in the office, I drive 2-2.5 hours round trip. I also have travel days where I visit different sites, which may be anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours one way. Buuut then I work from home every Friday unless something comes up, I can work remotely some days, and I can build flexibility into a day as needed. However, if I'm in the office M-F it's a rough week. ;) Is this something you could talk to your boss about? More and more employees are working remotely or considering flexibility to be a benefit these days!

  31. Yeh for surprise days off! That is great that you got to spend the day with Jared! Mic is a fan of McD's fraps but I have never honestly had one. I am not a fan of cold coffee at all, so when I get one at Starbucks I get the ones without coffee :) Otherwise I get hot cream with a touch of coffee. lol!

  32. You deserved it! I had last Friday off so we cleaned out the baby's room which we had been using as an office/stuff all the extra crap in room. It felt so good to not have to spend my whole weekend cleaning :)
