Sallie & Perkins: And then there was one...

July rocked. And it sucked. It's such a bittersweet feeling as we pay down our debt. Sending huge payments week after week to knock out our student loans really does get old! Becoming debt-free has been our ultimate goal now for roughly 14 months and we're so proud of ourselves most days. But then there are the days we stress and whine and complain to each other about how we want to go do more fun stuff and just spend money. We are truly living on LESS than one of our incomes, which is so incredible when we think about it, but it's also boring a lot of the time!

But we hung on, despite some meltdowns, despite some tears (Ahem...Sallie) and we made July the best we absolutely could and focused on our debt. And what do you know!? There were good results in the end.

We paid off $2,509.23 in July 2014!

Definitely one of our best months in awhile!! The goal was to have our second to last loan -the one and only Sallie Mae- completely paid off by the end of July. Sadly, we missed it by just a tad, but made the final payment on that loan on August 7th. Friends.... Are you hearing what I'm saying?!

We are DOWN TO ONE STUDENT LOAN TO PAY OFF!

We never thought we'd see this day. We have a tough few months ahead of us, as this last loan is a beast, but just knowing that every extra dime we've got can go to ONE loan now? It's surreal. This time last year we were still working on multiple large loans and knew it would be a long journey ahead of us. Now there is just the lone survivor and we won't be keeping him around too much longer.

And because sometimes Sallie & Perkins just need to have a little (cheap) fun instead of typing paragraphs and paragraphs about debt- we've got a little treat for you all today. Enter the original music video to celebrate our "One Less Problem" :)

  1. Congratulations! That is so awesome. You guys are doing great! I totally know the feeling of wanting to not have to budget everything. We don't have debt, but we've been saving up for a house down payment for a while. It's worth it in the end, though, when you don't owe anyone any money :)

  9. YAY! You guys should be so proud. It definitely is a bummer paying bills instead of spending money on fun things, but think of how much you will have to splurge with when you're done! Not to mention if you ever need to (or want to) live on one income, you already know you can do it. Congrats!!

  33. This is definitely something to celebrate!!!! I'm seriously planning on reading through all of your posts so that when Joe and I sit down in a few months after this house stuff has settled and we can stick to an official budget again, we can use some of your ideas to stick to a budget and pay off as much of our house as we can (we're trying to refinance in the next couple of years... I'll have to tell you all about it) and still keep a budget for our little renovation projects. You guys are awesome!!! I'm super impressed with how much you pay off each month!

  37. This is hilarious and inspiring! Fortunately I made it through 4 years of college with no debt and even ended up with a brand new car as my graduation gift courtesy of my really awesome parents. My husband though...not so much. He went 5 years to a private school and 2 years of grad school. His student loans are horrific and make my stomach uneasy every time I see the number. We will probably still be paying on them when we're 90 years old. Anyways....I love reading y'all's updates because it truly is inspiring and motivating, and I can't wait till the day my husband and I can start knocking the debt down quickly.
