Sallie & Perkins: ONE YEAR PROGRESS

Today is an anniversary of sorts. Or perhaps a birthday better describes today? More like a "Nerdversary" if you ask me! One year ago, Sallie & Perkins were introduced to the blog world. Introduced to the entire world, if you really think about it. One year ago, these two nerdalicious characters took a leap of faith and decided to share their debt journey with anyone who wanted to listen. They decided that putting it out there for all to read was a great way to keep themselves accountable, and hopefully help a few others along the way. They've tossed out numbers here and there and kept you pretty up-to-date on the student loan elimination, but today- they are ready to get really real.

We started seriously debt-slashing on 6/1/2013,  with a total student loan balance of:  $42,325.80
One year of debt-slahing later, on 6/1/2014 our balance is:  $16,774.82

WE PAID OFF: $25,550.98!!!!!!

What did we do??

-- Cancelled our cable services
-- Downgraded our cell phone plans to a cheaper option
-- Cut back majorly on eating out
-- Cooked healthy, simple meals at home way more often
-- Budgeted for some fun every month BEFORE the month started
-- Messed up here and there
-- Got back on track and motivated ourselves to keep going
-- Came up with ideas for creative, cheap dates
--Sold extra crap on Ebay and Craig's List
-- Used coupons and only shopped for necessities
-- Made do with what we had
-- Decided vacations were a must so we budgeted and paid cash for them
-- Didn't let the vacation make us feel guilty and kept pressin' on
-- Talked debt and budgets with as many people as we could
-- Prayed for guidance and wisdom in our financial life
-- Looked at the big picture
-- Made much bigger efforts to conserve energy and lower our bills
-- Celebrated every milestone along the way
-- Oh, and we burned every old loan paper we don't need anymore!!

firepit burning loan papers

Thank YOU for reading along with us, for putting up with us, and for humoring us along the way. As you can see, we've still got a good chunk of student loans left, but we're attacking them at full-speed and hope to have them gone in just a few short months. It's been such an eye-opening experiencing… living BELOW our means, sacrificing material "stuff" we think we need or want. It's been one of the best year's of our lives and we cannot wait to reach that official debt-free milestone. If anyone has any doubts or fears about tackling their own debt, just know it IS possible and that small changes, over time, will get you there too!

  37. You guys are awesome! Congratulations. You have made such a huge accomplishment. We've never tackled our student loans because they are just so big!! I just feel like even a little bit here and there won't make a dent, so why even try. We just continue to pay our monthly minimum (which we will be doing forreeevvveerr). It just shows that over a course of a year the "extras" can really add up!! Thanks for the inspiration, girl!

  38. Dude! I'm not even kidding, this post is encouraging. This is exactly where we are in life and you made me realize that we need to track it...not just talk about it. Seriously, thanks for the encouragement. Also, we talked about down grading our phones. Did you do the whole "get rid of the smart phone" stuff?

  52. This is by far one of my absolute favorite blog post series. So happy for you guys, and I love that your hubby participates in the blog activities. Now if I could just get to work on my debt! I think I'm actually going to sell my car (live in Chicago - don't need it) and not having that expense could help me pay down other debts.

  53. Erin, errr, Sallie... this is freakin' AMAZING! I mean honestly, can you believe you paid off over $25,000 in ONE YEAR?! That's insane and truly shows the power of buckling down and working hard towards a goal! I'm SO proud of you guys and really happy for you... not to mention super thankful. You've made the subject of debt less taboo and it's nice to read of others in the same boat and also SUPER helpful to be inspired to do the same. Thank you a million times over for this refreshing series on your blog... best ever!!

  60. I know this post is couple of months old, but this is awesome. I am doing this exact same thing on my own. I owe quite a bit more than you guys did, but I have already paid off 2 small loans and working on my third. I just started in October of last year. I will have paid off over $30K by the end of 2016 by myself. I will still have a long way to go, but the strict budget is working. It's extremely hard, but totally working!
