Sallie and Perkins: Do You Coupon?

Ahh, coupons. Shows like Extreme Couponing may have actually turned OFF some people to the idea of coupons over the past few years. The people on that show spend hours buying newspaper inserts, looking for coupons online, cutting coupons, organizing coupons, planning their trip to the store, the actual shopping trip itself… it seems INSANE. Not all of us have the time, energy or desire to become one of those people buying 82 boxes of Cheerios, but shows like EC have made people think that's the only good way to coupon.
Well this is Sallie and I have to disagree. We use coupons in this house, and we use them regularly. Sure, it takes some time to sort through the ads, clip them and be able to use them correctly- but no where near the time many seem to think it will. To me, spending an extra hour or so a week to save a lot of money is completely worth it. Plus, I clip coupons while we watch TV so it makes it go quicker.

We shop for the majority of our groceries and household items at Kroger. If you shop at Kroger- you MUST use the Kroger Plus card. Easiest way to save money, just by swiping that little card each time you check out. On top of that? Get on Kroger.com and check out their digital coupons. You can load them RIGHT to your card, and I get some of my absolute best deals by combining their coupons with a manufacturer coupon. In fact, I haven't bought laundry detergent in over a YEAR. I scored an amazing deal LAST January and stocked up.

That's key- looking for the deals and knowing price points. With the items we buy regularly, I know what's a good sale price and what's not. When you start combining coupons with sales? You'll save bundles! If you're overwhelmed by matching the sales to your coupons? Check out websites like The Krazy Coupon Lady who practically tells you what coupon to take to what store. She does so much of the legwork it really takes the pressure off me to figure out what the best deals are. She also lists weekly freebies/samples and I take advantage of those as much as I can.

Again, Perkins and I NOT extreme couponers, but when we put forth a little effort, the savings can be amazing. This week I scored 4-packs of toilet paper for just a DIME each. TEN TINY CENTS! We don't have a giant stockpile - or even room for one if we wanted it- but we do stock up on the things that won't go bad like TP, paper towels, shampoo, razors, etc. To me, there is nothing more annoying than running out of toiletries and having to pay full price for them because you're in a bind.
My advice to people wanting to start couponing and saving money is simply to start small. Don't feel like you need to go out and conquer the world with your first coupon experience. I didn't! I started with toothpaste… I made that my focus, clipped a few coupons here and there, looked at deals at Kroger, CVS, Walgreens… Before I knew it, I'd snagged free toothpaste and I was hooked!

So get clippin' :)

  1. I reallyyyyy need to start couponing. I like your advice of starting small. That's always my problem...I try to go hardcore and then get totally burned out.

  2. My sis-in-law is an extreme couponer and they give us the toothpaste/shampoo/deodorant etc. that she gets for free--now that's my secret to benefiting from coupons. :P We're not trying to stockpile at all, we're trying to use up everything we have, but I do keep an eye out for coupons for stuff we'd be buying anyways, because the dollars do add up! The problem is that we're picky about brands...and I find that there's much less selection when you're trying to find coupons only for specific brands, which is too bad! Our grocery store just had a 5% off all groceries coupon out last week--it's only a little, but hey, it helps to get a few cents off things that there's never coupons for!

  4. All of these are great tips!!! I'm a horrible couponer (is that a word?) I always cut them out but completely forget to use them. FAIL.

After reading this I promise I'm going to attempt to use them more;)

  5. Couponing is my favourite! I get such a thrill out of seeing how much I can save on my total bill or how cheap I can buy a single item…this probably makes me a huge geek but I am AOK with that! Do you use the Checkout 51 App? It's the neatest thing, almost like coupons in reverse!

  6. I hope you're aware of the Thanksgiving Day Walgreens Deal....every morning on Thanksgiving I wake up early, grab my coupons & head to Walgreens and STOCK UP on all their deals. I think last year I got over $100 worth of stuff for like $15. Ohhhhh, I am thankful for walgreens! :) (that's the only time of year I coupon...haha!)

  7. Starting small is a great tip! Sometimes I WANT to coupon but honestly it's so overwhelming and in my head I'm going to have to sit at my table for like 2 hours just to save 50 cents and that just doesn't seem worth it. I like the idea of picking on thing to focus on and going from there!

  9. I love this post since I post about coupons all the time! I don't consider myself an extreme couponer either. I totally agree that it only takes about an hour each week for me to clip the coupons I want and then I'm done for the week. It's so worth it to me. It has become so hard for me to pay more than a few cents for certain things, especially toothpaste, shampoo, etc. I use the Krazy Coupon Lady but also the Living Rich With Coupons website.

  10. I've started couponing too! I definitely am not an extreme couponer, and I'm definitely interested in how you got paper towels for a dime, but I have saved some good money couponing! :)

  11. Yes, I totally love to coupon! Things like detergent, toothpaste, TP, shampoo, etc... you should never have to pay full price for that stuff, and a lot of times you don't need to pay ANYTHING for it if you do it right! It's worth the little extra time each week!

  13. I actually look forward to cutting coupons. I do it in front of the TV too so it doesn't seem like such a chore. I love finding a good deal and saving money. It's so easy to use a coupon, so I don't know why people don't do it. My favorite is when I'm in a store and I see that another customer has left coupons for an item on the shelf that I needed. #winning

  16. First of all, your pictures are cracking me up. Tee hee!

Secondly, I do some couponing. The hubby makes fun of me & says I'm like a lil ol' lady going through my coupons. But you know what, they really help sometimes especially when you're shopping once a week for a family of four! I wish that I had more time to do some online coupon searching...I should make the time cuz this girl likes to save money! :)

  17. Since I live at home, I don't currently coupon....but once I get out on my own (whenever that is) I will definitely coupon. Who doesn't like saving money? I've pinned many many many pins about how to coupon. :)

  18. If I don't have enough time to go online and load the Kroger coupons, I use the app on my phone. Love it!

  19. i use a couple different apps like cartwheel for target and checkout 51. i am not the type that likes to buy anything in bulk... and when i do clip a coupon i ALWAYS forget to use it. it could be glued to my hand and i would STILL forget. #notthebestshopperonearth

  20. I know I probably don't get the best deals but I find target to be a great place to score at for minimal work. Between their cartwheel app, the target card (5% off every purchase), in store coupons, online coupons, manufactures coupons, and in store sales you can get some good deals. But pennies to TP that amazing!!

  22. I would love to do this if I had someone whom already did couponing like this so that I knew it would be easier... Oh the woes of wanting to but feeling like I could be overwhelmed at the same time with it :( GO YOU keep up the great work

  23. I really need to get on my couponing abilities. I coupon a little bit, but I haven't got the hang of it and usually the Kroger brands are cheaper than the coupon. Thanks for the website to the Krazy Coupon Lady!
