A Weekend Update

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! I have an Irish name… and that's about as far as my celebrating goes this year. Oh, and I am wearing green to avoid any annoying, pinching co-workers, but that's definitely it. The only time I've ever 'celebrated' was a couple years ago when Jared and I ran a 5k, the Shamrock Shuffle and we got coupons for free food afterwards so we went to a local Irish pub. Because, really... who turns down free food??

This weekend I got to meet the adorable, real-life Becky! She came to visit my sister-in-law and I got to meet up with them both for a fun Friday night of mexican food and just a good time. Blogging is amazing, truly! Also, does anyone else have other experience with resizing photos for blogger and not losing quality? My account randomly wants to make everything super blurry now when I resize and I can't figure out for the life of me WHY!

In other news, I've got my first runners injury =\ My hip had been feeling a little sore for the past few runs, but I didn't think too much of it until Saturday's run. After I got done I had some shooting pain in my hip that was unlike anything I'd felt before and as the day went on, the pain increased. I took some Advil for the pain and I've been attached to the heating pad like it's my best friend, so I'm hoping with a few days of rest I'll be alright. I've only got another 7 weeks until my half-marathon so I don't feel like I can afford to take too much time off; but I also can't afford to seriously hurt myself! Runner friends, any insight to hip injuries is much appreciated!

That's all for today, I suppose. I won't bore you with an updated word-count on my novel (I worked on it a lot this weekend!) or a summary of the book I just finished (A Wedding in December- highly recommend) but instead, I'll invite you to comment :) When a little email pops up with a comment I probably enjoy it more than I really should… but that's okay! That's what this bloggy world is about and I hope you'll say hello on this Monday!

  1. I had hip issues at one point (but not the kind of pain you're experiencing...more of an achy feeling) I suggest lots of stretching and hip exercises. And also not sure if your shoes are new or not but that can cause some pain too. I think you're doing the right things - take it easy for a couple days - and see where you're at

  2. Ugh, sorry about your hip pain, that's no fun, especially when you want to keep training! We don't really do anything to celebrate St. Patrick's Day...even though I am part Irish... haha!

  3. Hope your hip feels better soon! Happy St. Patrick's Day!! I like Anita Shreve's books so might have to check that one out!!

  4. So sorry about your injury! I've had lots of hip problems but nothing that I would describe as a shooting pain. Sometimes things like that just randomly come up and go away after a little bit of attention and rest. I think hip problems are pretty common because most people have weak hips. Do you do any cross training or strength training? Maybe look into some hip-strenghtening exercises. One thing to watch out for is when you do run again is that you might subconsciously overcompensate with your other leg and end up with an injury in that leg. Just be careful! Hopefully it doesn't end up being a big deal! You've got the right attitude though - with 7 weeks left you still have plenty of time to train, and it's better to take some time off now than risk being injured for your big day.
Other than that it sounds like you had a great productive weekend! Woohoo!

Ugh sorry about your hip! I hope stretching and icing it helps. I agree about your shoes causing pain too, getting fitted with the right shoe for your strike definitely makes a difference!

Sorry about your hip :( keep heating that baby up!! I'm not sure what the spot is called where I'm sore...but it doesn't sound like my hip...more my butt. LOL makes me limp when I walk though! AHHH our half is coming so fast!! Can't wait to run that with you!!

  11. Re: the images-- this tutorial was really helpful for me: http://xomisse.com/blog/automatically-resize-blogger-images-to-fit-blog-post-area

Re: your hip pain-- one, I would suggest foam rolling. It hurts like the dickens, but so worth it. Also, go to a running store and make sure you're wearing the right kind of shoes. Something about the Q-angle of the hips. I'm not going to pretend to know what I'm talking about here :)

  16. I ran track in high school and was plagued with hip problems. Turns out it isn't usually your hips that are at fault but you've got tightness in the muscles that support your hips. Look up stretches for your piriformis and iliotibial band (IT band). Here are some ideas:

  17. I went to the St. Pat's parade on Saturday to watch my niece...that's the extent of my celebration this year. I stayed out of pubs on purpose, ha! But I love the green-ness of everything! Now, two years ago we celebrated at Disney, that was fun!

  25. Noo, hip pain is the worst! I have tendinitis in my hips and a big fat Foam Roller (like this one http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=foam+roller) tends to help if the pain is on the outer side of the hip. Just lay on your side and roll back and forth on it. Good luck, hope you feel better soon!!

  30. Yep, I forgot to wear green even though my husband reminded me to this morning lol. Green is just not my color! I love the yellow cardigan you're wearing! Very Spring-y which is needed right now :)

  31. I was home all day and DID not wear green...if I were at school my kid's surely would have pinched me. Haha. I did make corned beef though. Does that count for something? :) Glad you had a good weekend minus the injury. Yikes!

  32. I don't always comment on every post but I absolutely adore your blog!!

  33. Hoping your hip is feeling better - that is the worst part about training. Totally throws everything off.

About not celebrating SPD...it's not all that it's cracked up to be. I mean, yes, it was fun back in the day. But nowadays, I couldn't even imagine consuming all the alcohol I used to. Makes me hungover just thinking about it!

  36. Have you tried foam rolling?!

My last 1/2 marathon I got hip pain a lot, and then I recently started foam rolling after every run, it works wonders!

    1. That seems to be the consensus... I need a foam roller!! Thanks :)

  37. Yeah... I don't have a foam roller, but it's like all everyone talks about! I should get one. Annnyway, injuries are the worst. Thankfully I don't have too many injury stories to share. I've been lucky. But I did have a weird hip injury in January. My best advice (which I hate following myself) is to rest it. If it hurt as in a bad pain hurt, you will only make it worse by running on it. I am the WORST sick/injured person, but seriously that's the best you can do besides taking Advil and using the heat/ice pack. Hope it gets better soon. Also, you won't lose as much as you think taking a week off. It's better than having to take months off when you really hurt yourself!

  38. I'm way late to commenting but I am catching up today! Running injuries SUCK! I know that doing hurdles for 5 years are part of my knee injury.
