Getting Rid of Stuff

Friday night Jared had a guy's night scheduled and I had every intention of catching up on blog emails, writing and designs. I hit the gym hard after work that day  and by the time I settled in with my veggies, hummus and water, my creativity was long gone. So I did the second best thing… I logged into Pinterest and wasted hours of my life pinning away. That, and starting the very large task of cleaning up my pictures on my computer. That's an overwhelming task right there. I've got years and years of digital images on here that could be gone in an instant if something were to happen to my precious computer. That scary thought is motivating me to keep working on these yearly photo books and also to back up my images on CD. One day I'll get caught up… or is that even possible, considering I add another 200 images a week to my computer?! #bloggerprobz

Now that Spring is on the horizon -- okay, who am I kidding?! It's still 20 degrees in Ohio and green grass and flowers could easily be more than two more months away. However, I'm choosing to be optimistic and think Spring! Jared and I have already started a little bit of our Spring cleaning and decluttering and it's already making a big difference. We live in a smaller tri-level and I swear every closet, drawer, nook and cranny has been stuffed full of just that, STUFF.

We definitely have way too much stuff in general, it's shameful actually. So it's been fun getting some of it out of our house little by little. We took an entire day and sorted clothes to keep, donate and throw away. I'm happy to say we were able to take THREE garbage bags full of clothes to GoodWill.

There are SO many decluttering checklists/spreadsheets on Pinterest and they have definitely been a huge help in keeping us focused. Jared and I plan to live in our house another 1-2 years tops, and I know I don't want to take a bunch of unused stuff into our next home. Since Pinterest can be overwhelming with information at times, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite organizational links/blogs.
My all-time favorite right now is the 52 weeks to an organized home challenge. I've printed a copy out and you don't have to go in order (I'm not!) but it's a great reminder of all the things big and small that need organized in our house. Of course they don't all apply to each of us (I could eliminate the week of pets, homework area, kids' closets) but I've been trying to pick at least 1-2 of these a week to make some progress on. It's always fun to cross one off and hopefully by the end of the year my house is perfect ;) Some of the tasks you could knock out in an hour or two, others will be on-going projects- but it's an easy way to keep track of what needs done.

A couple other favorites? Simplify 101 - Monthly goals/lists; a great starting point! Also, Two Things in Common - I love her deep cleaning schedule. Rather than doing ALL these things each Spring, she gives you one area/thing to deep-clean each month of the year. What organization projects have you taken on, or do you NEED to take on this month or year? :)

  2. We're planning to move this year, so I've been already working on majorly starting the sorting and getting rid of stuff process. I don't even think we have all that much stuff, comparative to people who have lived in the same house for decades, but still, it accumulates, and it feels great to not have unnecessary stuff cluttering up every bit of space!

  3. We are planning on moving in about as year as well. Our house has NO storage options except an attic so It's been hard to keep anything extra. I am thankful that I've always been anticlutter, but my husband on the other hand likes to keep everything that might have a purpose...our garage is the scary part of the house. Even thinking about it gives me anxiety!
Keep it up girl! I might have to try that 52 week list!

  7. I just went through all the different areas that I have clothes and gave two huge bags full to my sister to take to the girls she works with. They always appreciate them so much! I love the idea of having a list to cross off. I will have to check these out!

  8. Yesterday I was standing in my cluttered apartment, and I said "is it weird that I am looking forward to spring cleaning?!" Winter just sucks the motivation out of me :( I can't wait to open all the windows and start a much needed deep clean!

  9. NICE WORK! I love decluttering, especially clothes in the winter time. I feel like such a good person when I give away extra sweats so someone can be warm.

    Keep up the great work.

  10. I am always always always decluttering. I can't stand clutter AT ALL. Gives me anxiety lol My husband makes fun of me. Thankfully we just moved and did lots of our decluttering then, but things still get crazy if you don't keep up with it. I always had a tub ready to dump stuff in to donate!

  12. I keep saying I'm going to clean out the closets and the dumping ground that is our bedroom, no one sees our bedroom so it seems like the perfect place to put things we don't know what else to do with. If I ever actually get to work I might be able to restock the entire Goodwill store! :)

  13. I'm really hoping that we can get rid of a lot of stuff when we move!! There's no point in moving all sorts of stuff into a new house when we never use it!

  21. I have years worth of digital pictures to go through too. It's crazy. I did, however, stick them all on an external hard drive. John is a freak about photos. I would have to move far far away if something happened to our photos. I'm three years behind on photo books. Unacceptable.

  22. I LOVE getting rid of stuff, it is seriously one of my most favorite hobbies! I just hate having clutter and just...STUFF that never gets used. I try to go through it and toss/donate every 2-3 months (somehow there is ALWAYS a ton of stuff, not sure how the math on that works out?). Thanks for the links, I will definitely use them!

  23. I've been tackling closets. I still have to get our basement storage closet cleaned out which means probably getting rid of a bunch of stuff. It's motivating when things start to look clean but it can be SO overwhelming if you try to do too much at once.

  24. I love that there is a weekly list. That's awesome! Although, I'm actually pretty organized now. I definitely got in the organizing groove during my third trimester. Still happy when I open all of our closets and they're clean. Such a good feeling!

  26. Thanks so much for the mention! It's such a great idea to get a head start on your spring decluttering. After this winter, we'll all be overly eager to head outside when spring finally arrives!
    Happy organizing!

  27. De-cluttering and organizing my house is my big goal for this year. I feel like every room in my house needs to be gone through and minimized. I am trying to do one room a month. I will be checking out the lists for sure!

  28. Not having a place totally my own has definitely helped keep me from collecting too much stuff since I don't have much storage! I love re-organizing and throwing things out though :)

  29. I totally love this. Michael and I are putting some things in a garage sale our friends are having this weekend just because we are tired of looking at stuff. We've already found a new home for an old stove (random) that we had from his old house. I try to take my clothes to the local high school. It seems random but the counselor once told me that one of her favorite things is to secretly give some of her students whom she knows need new clothes some gently worn clothes and see their eyes light up.
