On the Bright Side

Yesterday I was given a surprise day off by my boss and I can't even put into words how much I needed and appreciated that day. An entire day to myself after spending countless hours at the office? Incredible. I got a workout in at the gym, did a quick grocery trip, made lunches for the rest of the week and dinner for that night, did a few loads of laundry and even got to catch up in the blogworld. So someone please explain to me why I can't have one weekday to stay at home each week? Oh, what I would give to have this kind of work schedule!!

2014 certainly started out a little rough with a Bengals loss and then Jared getting into an accident when his car slid on some black ice. He is absolutely fine, but his poor little car was not. He's been car-less all week and we are about to be quite a bit poorer. Thankfully we have an emergency fund that definitely eased the pain some, but it's never fun to shell out that kind of cash on car repairs!

But, it's a new year, a fresh start and we're choosing to look on the bright side of things around here! Like how when the Bengals go to the Super Bowl NEXT year?? It'll be in sunny Arizona, not the arctic. And how we didn't have to pay for a rental car this week thanks to Jared's brother. Luckily, Jared and his brother work at the same place and he's been able to share a car with him and carpool.

Other things I'm currently loving?
Cooking delicious, new meals at home more and more. I'm telling you, the kitchen is my favorite place to me. (Now if only it was a littttle larger!) I plan to start sharing more healthy recipes on here, which I'm really excited about!
I cannot wait to share what this is with you all! YUM.
Skyping with my niece. I think she MIGHT finally be figuring out who I am on that flat screen that makes noise ;)

Filling in my new planner with lots of fun things to come this year. Neon Sharpie's just double the fun.

All the bloggers participating in the no-spend month. Our car situation certainly was unexpected, but we are holding strong and avoiding unnecessary expenses! It's so nice having a big group of us doing the same thing, keep at it!

Using entirely too many !!!s when talking to Robin about her recent engagement and all the upcoming wedding planning.
The clean, decluttered feel after Christmas. Once all the decorations were boxed up and put away, our entire house suddenly felt about five times bigger!

Counting down until vacation. I mean, is there anything more exciting??

Having free time again! It's been insane to me to leave my office at 5 and be home sitting down for dinner before 6pm every day this week. I have missed my husband, my home, my life! Thankful to have those things back for a few months.

What are you loving this week?

  1. I love this! There is always something good to look forward to. First off, yay for your day off friend. Maybe it will happen more often. Fingers crossed right?! I think I'm most looking forward to a certain trip coming up and just this year in general. I love new years and all the excitement that it brings.

  2. I feel you/jared about carless the first week of 2014......that was me the day AFTER new years and the day following. Luckily it was only a popped tire but noone wants to be car-less or 700$+ out of money they could be spending else where. As long as he is ok that is the most important! :-) Also I agree with the !!!'s when talking about Robin. I cant even imagine how you feel considering you two are so close but I freak out, too! I Can't wait to see/hear all about it!

  3. I'm doing no spend January with you... Like REALLY doing it and it's been unbelievably hard but worth it!

Now, a question since you are frugal like I am... Is the Erin Condren planner worth it? I love it but that price tag is so so high...

  7. I was so sad to take decorations down, but I couldn't agree with you more about everything feeling bigger! More space! More room. Less clutter. Sigh of happiness. Happy Almost Weekend!

  8. I agree, the house looks so big without decorations. And while I'm sad to put them away, the clean, fresh looks help with looking forward to a new year ya know?!

  12. I'm trying to do no-spend January! Although I'm calling it stay-in-budget January since I'll be lucky to even do that much...we've already had some issues too, although minor compared to yours (broken microwave, broken wireless router). How is it that as soon as you decide not to spend money on the things you don't need, the things you DO need suddenly want to take all your money?!
I am super jealous of your love for the kitchen. That salad looks amazing thou, and like it might be fairly painless to put together!

  13. That feeling of clean/more room is exactly why I cleaned Christmas up early. I was just done for some reason and Keith had no arguments there!

Sorry to hear about the car, with the weather we're getting I'm hoping we don't have to do that but we'll see!

  14. So glad you got a day off! That was great of your boss. I'm totally with you on wanting a weekday off every week to do life things.

Sorry about the car, that's never a fun thing to spend money on.

I've had one unexpected expense this month - my down coat ripped and I can't commute without one! Thankfully they were 50% off when I ordered my replacement. Otherwise going strong and only spending what's been budgeted for and it feels good. A lot of people who aren't bloggers are joining too!

  15. I'm SO happy that you got that surprise day off - you deserved it for sure! Sorry about the car issues, but glad Jared's OK.

  16. So glad that Jared is okay!!

Literally every week I think to myself, guuuh if I could just have a day at home, or even a half day to get some things done! You lucky duck, you deserved it!!

  17. I agree, a weekday off each week would be SOOOO nice! I would be willing to work longer hours to just do 4 days a week! Plus think of how much you would save on gas for commuting, money on work clothes, etc. It would be wonderful! You could go to the bank and all those other annoying things that you have to do M-F!

That salad looks amazing!! I cant wait to see your healthy recipes! I am always looking for new things to try!

I am trying to do the no spending this month too but wound up in the ER this past weekend and lots of dr bills. Don't you hate when unexpected things come up? Glad he is OK though! The car can be replaced, he can not!

  18. Yay for positivity in the face on some crap. I'm so sorry to hear about the car, but yay for having an emergency fund! I'm working on mine now. Slow and steady and fingers crossed for now emergencies in the meantime. Spending freeze, spending freeze is chugging right along. So far, so good!

  19. So much happy here it is awesome! Can't wait for the recipe for the salad. Looks delicious!

  20. I completely understand! One random day off a week would be great! Heck I would even do some work from home that day if it meant being able to fold & actually put away laundry while I am doing it! Some days I sit at work without the phone ringing or anything to do :( I need to be at home instead on those days! lol!
Love that planner! I have been seeing it on every blog recently....I think I need one! :)
I will be back at the healthy recipes on Tuesday as well :)

  21. A weekday at home is totally at a different level than a weekend day at home. Always more productive! Let's start a petition.

  22. This all just makes me so very happy for you, friend!! Besides the car accident, which gave me a sad face just to read about - BUT something good comes out of everything. Nothing wrong with a little extra sibling bonding time, right?! Hehe
But yaaay for a great and much-deserved day off for you! I'm glad life is getting back to normal and you're able to enjoy days more often instead of spending them exhausted. Love you so much and can't wait to get back to our chats soon! :)

  23. What a blessing to have a surprise day off! Seriously, that's awesome! And my husband and I got into an ice-related "slid into a ditch" type accident a couple weeks ago. Like you guys, we're happy it wasn't worse, but I'm not sure my poor car will completely recover--if we can just get it back to being driveable soon I'll be grateful!

  24. Yay for a surprise day off!! I think it's good to look at the positives when negatives try to get you down! Good for you girl!! Also, can't wait for that recipe!! :)

  25. Yes! I am so into the one weekday off deal! It's one of the few things I miss about my last job scenario. Or like a 10-2 workday. I haven't worked a traditional schedule since I think 2008 and I feel so trapped!

  26. So glad Jared is okay and that you got the day off! It's surprising how just that one day to do whatever you please really refreshes the soul :)

  29. A surprise day off?! That's fantastic! I would kill for one of those... I just imagine all of the things I could get accomplished. What a bummer about Jared's car, but I am intrigued about this "no spend month" and I'm going to go check it out right now! I hope this doesn't bum you out, but I am LOVING all the Seahawks hype that's buzzing around Seattle this week... I'm so excited for the game on Saturday I can hardly concentrate on anything else!!

PS - So excited to see myself on your sidebar and I love the fancy new button! :-)
