Free Things

Well, the blog post that I'd had in mind today just isn't going to happen. We lost power again last night for a few hours. It's not the tv or internet or even our cell phone chargers I miss when this happens. It's the fact that dinner was only half-cooked and got ruined! After a hard workout at the gym I was so ready to eat a feast when I walked in the door. Instead, Jared and I snacked on pretzels and dip... how un-satisfying! Sure, we had good conversation and laughs just like the last time this happened but when a girl doesn't get her food? Ohh, watch out! #Hangry

So while last night's power outage was dumb, we did make a mental list of places we planned to go this year. Some actual destinations that we'll travel too, others were just things like a visit to our local aquarium or a tiny village nearby that we've always heard good things about. Thinking of free things to do was on my mind as well, especially with No-Spend January. This weekend is the first weekend in I don't know how long that we have ZERO PLANS. It's incredibly tempting to want to fill it with dates and dinners and movies and things that cost money... but we know we can't!

It'll be a fun challenge to come up with completely free, yet entertaining things to do this weekend. It's easy not to spend money when we're working all the time, but now I'm back to normal hours and all I want to do is spend. Bring it on, free weekend! I'd love to hear your ideas of free things you and your family or friends like to do. Especially in the winter time... it's harder when it's cold out! Help us out! Oh, and is it too early to wish for Spring? :)

*PS- total blogger fail today. Just a raw post and no current pictures, so you get that random one of Jared and I. Whoops!

  1. Build a fort in your living room, pull out the blowup mattress, make homemade pizzas, and watch movies all weekend long. That's what me and my ex did Valentines weekend, and it was AWESOME, and free!

  2. definitely second the idea of movies and blankets! And homemade pizzas or something tasty :) We also like to play Wii games together, or trivia from our phones/computer, do crosswords, play board games, at-home workouts...etc! :)

  3. We are going to try "fort building" this weekend. Hahaha. That should be interesting. We're also going to break out all of our games. We're not big game people (I don't know why, cuz they're awesome!). We also have the "Heads Up" app on our phones. Have you heard of that game? It was created by Ellen Degeneres. It's HILARIOUS. We could play that for hours. =D HAve a good weekend, Erin! (& Jared too!)

  4. YES. As childish as it sounds, build a fort! I do this with Matthew every now and then and he LOVES it (and of course I do too, haha!) When I told a few of my friends we did this I'm pretty sure they thought I was crazy at first but then they did it and loved it too! Definitely makes watching a movie more interesting :) ENJOY your weekend!!!! :)

  6. I don't know if y'all have anything like this in Cincinnati, but we have a free museum here in Bentonville! OR go to the library, those are free! And always a good time. :) Have fun looking at different books or pretending you're back in college working at the library. Ha!

    1. I'm certainly going to be googling and seeing if there are any free museum dates! :) And we haven't been to our library since summer so that's a great idea too!

  7. I just recently heard about geocaching... haven't tried it yet, but it's like a treasure hunt using your GPS. We also make our won "People Watching BINGO" boards-- someone under dressed for the weather, a sports team tattoo, someone with a nose ring, someone wearing the same piece of clothing as you. It can get really creative!

  9. Ken and I like to hang out at Barnes and Noble. We usually get a drink at the cafe and browse the store forever, or bring our tablets and sit together and read. But we're nerds like that. Lately I've been so exhausted from work that all I want to do on the weekend is sleep ... so there's that. :)

  10. And that picture is on one of your Disney trips on the shuttle to your resort :)

I wish I were there right now! I have a friend who went down on Wednesday and is running in the RunDisney Dopey runs everyday this week.

Anywho enjoy your nothing weekend - what trips have you guys discussed for your year?

  11. Take a Tylenol PM and sleep through the weekend? Kidding! It is going to be so hard not to spend money- this freeze is definitely not easy!

  12. Go to the library and spend hours just reading and hanging out ;) Or bundle up and go for a hike (bring coffee in a thermose!) :) Bake bread/cookies (something that you already have the ingredients on hand to make of course!) Enjoy the weekend and relaxation!

  13. I've basically resorted to not leaving my house (other than for work) to make sure I don't spend any money this month. And its soooo hard! I'm playing games with friends tonight - its our favourite thing to do when staying in. I for sure won't be able to spend any money this way!

  14. Your power was out again?!?!?! Oh goodness girl, I couldn't deal. I know here in Cbus the art museum is free on Sundays. Anything like that in your neck of Ohiois?

  16. Do you have anywhere near you that you could go sledding?! If you don't have any sleds you can just use the cover of a plastic storage container - totally free if you already have one :)

  17. I vote for staying in watching movies and playing games! I wish I had nothing to do this weekend so I could stay in my sweats and cuddle with my boy! Don't people understand January is hibernation month and I don't want to leave my house on the weekends?!!

  18. Sometimes I love weekends with no plans! Have a game night or a wine tasting (if you have any wine left in the house!)

  20. My husband and I just made a living room fort last night for a cheap date! We also made s'mores too so we had to buy about $8 worth of supplies, but depending on what snacks you already have, it could easily be 100% free. It made a normal night of TV-watching a lot more fun! :)

  25. Google some trails around your neighborhood or local area and go hiking.. maybe a self made nature hunt. Look for certain things and make a little collection of things you found together. If not to keep, maybe for a blog post. Go to a bookstore and find a silly book to read together, just pieces at a time.. sit together and pick out fun parts of the book and save quotes you find really funny.

  26. Go to the library, if weather permits you could take a long walk...learn a new card game, you two will have a blast! As usual ;) so excited you have a plan free weekend ahead!!!

  27. UGH to the power outage, especially while making dinner! I had to laugh because yesterday I foolishly didn't really eat all day, AND I actually went to the gym for the first time in forever. So last night we were out for dinner. I got pasta and Aaron got a pizza. I basically inhaled mine and I was certain that he wouldn't eat all his pizza so I figured I'd get to have some. But nooooooo, he ate it all (and we were with other people so I was trying to be polite).

  28. Oh man, what a bummer about the power outage! I would have been fuming about dinner... pregnancy means that I have very little patience when it comes to food these days. ;-) I'm usually a big fan of anything outdoors, if it isn't too cold. Lots of people have been blogging about short winter hikes and I've really been wanting to do one! But when I have a rare free weekend I love to just hibernate in the house with hubs or even on my own and check things off my list like reading books, watching things off the DVR, doing little projects, etc.

  32. If we get suuuuuper bored we start to clean out our closets and get rid of/donate the junk we know we really don't need. It can turn into a whole day of organization! For something more fun there is always catching up on TV shows, cooking/baking up a storm and going for joy rides. I love looking at houses and new parts of town. :) Happy weekend!

  33. Hanger is a wicked thing! That's crazy that your power went out again, I can't even remember the last time it happened here. Hopefully no more power outages for y'all any time in the near future!

  34. Oh no! That's such a bummer your dinner got ruined. :( When I want free, I always hit up the library for a good book, or free movies then make popcorn and cuddle up on the couch. That sounds nice to me...can't the weekend just start over again?
