When the Lights Go Out

A few weeks ago a storm came through our area and knocked out our power for about 4-5 hours. Initially, I was mad that dinner in the crockpot was ruined, since it wasn't completely done yet and I was really craving that teriyaki chicken. After sitting in the dark for roughly ten minutes complaining, we decided to just embrace it and try to enjoy it.

We lit practically every candle we own and dug out our lantern. We spent some time reading, just snuggled up and losing ourselves in the books we hadn't made time to pick up in awhile. We had chips, pretzels and dip for dinner since it was really our only option.
We got out a deck of cards and played Rummy all the way to 500. We love playing cards, yet never take the time to get them out and actually just sit and play! I have to be honest, this was the only point in the game I was winning.

We laughed, we told funny stories about other power outages we experienced as kids. We made lists of things to do for Christmas. Lists of places to travel to in 2014. Lists of 'inside jokes' we had. All in crayon, mind you, as it was the first thing I found, fumbling around in the dark house.

We ended up having so much fun, we stayed up well past midnight until the power came back on. Nights like these, the nights that don't go as originally planned end up being some of the best. It's funny how you think you know every single thing about a person.... I mean, I've known Jared for almost 8 years, and we've been marred for 2 and a half. Yet every life incident and experience brings out new things to talk about, new memories to make.

It's amazing what you can learn when the lights go out.

  2. So true! We had a night like that this week, minus the power outage ;) But it really is so nice just to sit down and talk. And laugh. And connect in a way that doesn't involve the TV or the computer or anything.

  3. last year and the year before, we had the 2 hurricanes hit the northeast and both those times I stuck it out at my parents house. We sat in the dark for a few days and it was a lot of card/board game playing. It is interesting to have to bring a flashlight with you to the restroom or shower by flashlight/candle.

  6. LOL, I saw the subject of this post and immediately started singing "When the lights go out in the city.." I'm functioning on little to no sleep so I'm a little cooky today but I'll be okay! Anyway.. I love how you and Jared embrace all the times you have together and enjoy yourselves. It's touching!

  7. That's sweet. I remember several years back when the power was out here in Columbus for a few days...it wasn't quite as much fun as this looks :)

  8. I thought of the Five song too! It's probably going to be stuck in my head now...
My husband and I played so much rummy while we were dating we decided it would be a lifetime goal to play "Rummy One Million" and we are into the 6000s right now haha. After we got married though, I got him hooked on Backgammon and we play almost nightly...
Sounds crazy, but I'm jealous of your power outage!!!

  13. You two are just the sweetest. I love this and you're right! Some of the coolest things happen when you lose power. It's nice to turn off the TVs, computers, and phones for a while.

  16. This is something I actually can't wait to happen with my husband! With my luck it will be a night he's working and I'll be home alone... butttt I secretly hope the lights go out one weekend and we can "camp" in the living room! Sometimes you just have to get a few minutes of complaining out and give the fun time to settle in. ;)

  17. I love this. It's so easy to get so wrapped up in our lives that we forget to take time out to just enjoy each other. I try to pick a night every few weeks or so for my fiance and I to turn off the tv & cell phones and play board games while eating dinner on the floor and just spending time together without distractions and interruptions. Those end up being the best nights!

  20. This is so sweet :) We had a pretty nasty winter storm last year that put us in the same situation. I love nights like these because they're often more memorable than the date nights you plan out!
