Simple Is Okay.

It's been one heckuva' week so far, that's for sure. I'm not even sure my head is on straight at this point! There have been many bumps in the road this week-- too many to count, in fact, but I'm pressing on. I will be honest and say that there are so many of my family members that could really use your prayers right now, they are appreciated more than I can even describe.
In the midst of the chaos, Jared and I found time to celebrate his 28 years on this earth and have a fun birthday celebration together. A night eating entirely too much sushi (if there is such a thing!) followed by Amish pumpkin cookies (they were drool-worthy), gifts and snuggling up to watch a new movie. Jared got spoiled in the gift department from parents, grandparents, siblings and of course, me!
Seriously? Sushi must be an art-form, I'd love to watch them make it sometime!

Part of me felt guilty this year that I didn't have some big, extravagant birthday celebration planned for Jared. Last year the Trans-Siberian Orchestra fell right on his birthday weekend, and the two years before I'd surprised him with parties with friends. We've been doing lots of fun little things in the past few weeks and declaring them part of Jared's birthday month, but no official big birthday celebration was planned. This year? This year was simple. And I realized that simple is okay.
The faces of two very-tired, very-overworked people.

Jared had a blast just doing dinner with me and loved opening gifts at our house later that night. We spent the evening talking about his goals for 'the year of 28' and what we would do, see, accomplish in the coming year. It was the perfect way to celebrate a birthday, if you ask me. Elaborate? Not at all-- but still, a worthy celebration of an awesome guy.

How do you choose to celebrate birthdays?

  12. I agree, sometimes simple is the best! We moved the day after A's birthday this year so it was a simple cake at his parents with his grandparents and that was it - and you know what? It was great! Happy 28th to Jared!!

  13. Ok.. dangit!! The clock just struck 9AM and you are the second person this morning that has made me overly salivate for sushi. I'm dying here! I'm so glad that Jared enjoyed his birthday. I like to blame is on "getting old" but I really enjoy simple birthdays now. I don't like a big to do. If anything, I just want to be around the ones I love. Sitting around the house and having a nice, home cooked meal and watching a good flick sounds fabulous to me. Anyway, I'm sending lots of love, hugs, and PRAYERS to you from warm and sunny Florida. Hopefully things start to look up for everyone soon! XOXO

  14. Simple is totally okay. I'm not doing anything super special for my birthday this year, just spending it with friends and Aaron.

I'm sorry about the tough times. Sending good thoughts and hoping that things get better.

  15. I prefer simple! My sisters birthday is today, she is coming over Saturday so we can make her dinner and cake. Then my daughter's birthday is Monday, we're going to McDonald's with a playland for lunch then we'll have a "sleep over party" in the living room while watching Disney's Planes and Monster's University from the Redbox.

I'm sorry things feel so chaotic right now, here's hoping things get better for you and your family soon and I'll keep you all in my thoughts.

  20. That's the perfect way to spend a birthday! In fact, I can't remember the last time I had a party or went out on my actual birthday. Also, spreading the love over the course of a whole month makes it feel even more special!

  21. Prayers are going up for your family, sweet girl <3 And happy birthday to Jared!!! You're right: there's no such thing as too much sushi. Not possible. And you can always watch them make it, at least at all the sushi restaurants here?! Just sit at the sushi bar and you get a front row seat!! :) It's pretty awesome. And simple is always okay. Sometimes, it's better :)

  24. I like to hang with my friends, and possibly go out. I also really enjoy the dinner I have with my mom and Boomer. Its just the three of us and its perfect. I love how excited Boomer gets to give me her gift. I do expect to do something pretty ridiculous when I turn 30 though. 2 years and counting.

  26. So, since I've been a bad blogger and have been a few days behind, Happy Belated to Jared!
    Simple is good.
We celebrate birthdays depending on how we feel at the time usually. The main thing that's consistent is the birthday boy/girl get to pick what's for dinner that night. Their day, their choice.
Keeping your family in my T&P's, love.

Oh, and I tagged you in my post today. :-)

  32. This year B turns 29, so we decided to do a Schmidt themed party (in honor of his 29th birthday episode) and I mostly plan on just yelling TWENTYNINE in the best Schmidt voice.
