Sallie & Perkins: Christmas on a Budget

It's the most wonderful time of the year!!! But, before we dive into a Christmas-filled post, please know that Sallie & Perkins are not the type of people who just skip right over Thanksgiving and head straight for the jingle-bells and candy canes. We love Thanksgiving and are stoked to entertain our own friends this year -on a budget of course. However, if we waited until Christmas to share our tips and tricks with you it would certainly be too late! We're just looking out for you, as always.
Now that we got that little disclaimer taken care of, welcome back! In case you're newer around here, be sure to click here to see where we're coming from and what this debt journey is all about. We promise to wait patiently until you're all caught up…

So Christmas Eve is 7 weeks from today… don't panic, don't panic. We wish we'd started even earlier than we did, but we definitely have been on top of our game this year and have bought a handful of presents already. Whatever you do, DON'T WAIT. Procrastinating on Christmas shopping will almost always end with you over-spending because you're unprepared and likely exhausted by the time you find what you need.

Something we're excited to use this year is Dave Ramsey's Christmas Budget tool to help us stay on track. It's completely FREE which makes it even better. You can check it out here. It's just like a paper/pen type of list of everyone you need to buy for, but better!
You get to plug in the numbers of how much you can/should spend on each person on your list to start things off. I think this is incredibly helpful because so many people don't realize how much they end up spending once they've bought gifts for everyone they plan to! Then, as you purchase gifts you can log them as well. You'll keep track of what you've already bought, and you'll have an estimate of what you can still spend on that person.

There are tons of other app's like this out there too-- just none that our ghetto phones can handle :( So, if you don't want to use Dave's program, I highly suggest finding an app to keep track of your Christmas spending. Having a plan for where your money will go is such an important step. We can't stress that enough!

The other thing we wanted to mention today was Black Friday. Dun, dun dunnnnn. I'm sure many of you have mixed feelings on this ridiculous day, but we do love it! Do we get out in the madness every single year? Nope, but we've definitely scored some incredible gifts at amazing prices when we do. Blu-rays are always a great gift for many of our family members, and we grabbed them for as low as $5 at Target a couple years ago. New movies, on blu-ray… $5!! Our friends Jared and Erin also got their television on Black Friday a few years ago- but we'll save that story for them for another day.

So check the ads. Scope out the deals, see if there are any that will actually save you money on things you need/want to buy as gifts. We don't have many kids to buy for, but you can score those hot toys as a fraction of the cost if you just plan a little. If you can put up with the crowds and the craziness for a day it could really be worth it!
Our last Christmas planning tip we'd remind you about is the Dollar Store. Such a good place to get gift wrap, gift tags, bags, tissue paper, even your Christmas cards. Except, if you're like us you won't need to buy any of that this year because you got yours for pennies the day after Christmas last year ;) WIN!

So do you feel a little better about Christmas? You've got 7 weeks to tackle your shopping and preparations and we know you can do it on a budget! What do you do to stay on track during the crazy holiday season? It's always going to be a time of year you spend more money than usual, but you don't need to whip out those credit cards to get by. You can plan and be smart and breathe a little easier this holiday season!

PS- Thoughts on our Christmas card for this year??? ;)

  4. Cheers to early Christmas shopping! We feel so on top of our shopping this year too, and already either have gifts bought for people or know exactly what we're getting and just have to place the order/hit up the store! Definitely a nice feeling compared to years' past of rushing around last minute. And saving dolla dolla bills is a major bonus! :)

  6. I've always been one to wait until after Thanksgiving every year because I feel like buying presents early is like celebrating too early and I like keeping them separate but with the extra people to buy for this year and trying to save for a wedding, we're definitely going to be doing it earlier! Love these ideas :)

  7. Im signed up for Dave's emails and started using his Christmas list thing too-- I think it's already helping me! Usually I just buy stuff as I see it and then all of a sudden I realize I've spent more on one person than another, and then you have to buy more to be fair- ah!

  8. I did something similar to that app...except I just have it on a google drive spreadsheet. I actually put all our gifts for the year on it - birthdays, anniversaries, etc, so I can set a budget and shop year-round...it's one of the reasons I'm done shopping already!

  10. I try to buy gifts throughout the year to help out! I love GroopDealz & Jane.com (was Very Jane) great deals on cute stuff!! Our Christmas shopping will be very limited this year! Like yall, I LOVE the day after Christmas sales!! I won't buy any gift wrapping supplies before Christmas just because I know I can get it dirt cheap then! I almost like it better than Black Friday...almost ha

  11. I am dreading all the spending that comes with Christmas, I have a very detailed 3 month spending plan so we can stay on track. I just hope one of life's little surprises doesn't come during that three months as they always seem to do at the most inconvenient times.

  12. I buy stuff throughout the year so it's not such a shock all at once. But then I decide I want to experience the malls in all their Christmas glory (because I love Christmas that much) and end up buying double for each person. I need a Christmas intervention! LOL

  15. Wow that program looks like a great idea! You're not gonna like what I'm about to say next butttt I've never actually done a total before to see what damage I've done Christmas shopping. It would be very interesting to know, and I'm pretty sure it would be a huge eye opener. Thanks you guys! :)

  16. I have definitely started Christmas shopping already and there are wrapped gifts at my parents house to save me the shipping costs since we are moving. Better to be ahead of the game. Also, that should absolutely be your Christmas card :)

  19. Super cute picture for Christmas. Plus in a few years, you can do a "revisit" when you can have a real baby take the place of the santa!

  23. Love the Christmas card! And you are absolutely right. My Husband and I were just talking about this a few days ago. We definitely want to start planning ahead a lot sooner next year. We are going to do the best we can this year with having very little planning time, but next year, we are going full budget mode for Christmas. Starting in like January, haha!

  24. We always start really early too - it's so easy to over spend if you wait til the last minute! I also save some electronics purchases for black friday, you can always find them somewhere on sale either in store or online!

  26. Thanks for all the great tips! Another thing to buy after Christmas is gift sets like the ones that have beauty products, perfume, and make-up. I always score on this items. I've also asked my friends to skip the gifts this year and let's just do a night out. My best friend and I have decided to only exchange birthday gifts since we already get so much at Christmas time anyways. The hardest person to save money on is my husband because he NEVER buys himself anything and I always want to get him stuff.

  27. That looks like an awesome tool for keeping track of how much I spend on each person! I find it so hard to stick to a limit, and I have the worst habit of picking up things throughout the year, putting them away and forgetting about them. Thanks for sharing!

  28. That app is a great idea and I always get gift wrap and what not at the $1 store saves a ton of $$$ each year for us :-)

  29. I laugh at all the Black Friday people mainly because Keith gets online and gets everything we want/need before the crazies attack each other at the stores. One year, I think last year, I said it would be fun to go see the crazies at Kohls. We got in line and the line was so long you could see the people sprinting who were first in line. We finally got inside and just walked around seeing everything. Then Walmart was next store so we went there and it was just fun to be lookers...saved money too! :)
