Why I'd Like to Live in a Dorm Again

Less cleaning. I mean you only get roughly 200 square feet to share with another adult human. You could literally clean it top to bottom, deep-clean style in less than 20 minutes. Not that you're going to actually clean unless it's Parents Weekend-- you're in college. But, like I said, less cleaning.
Dorm, Sweet Dorm.
Speaking of less cleaning, that means no dishes. Okay, maybe one bowl, one plate, a fork and a plastic cup for those easy mac meals and Gatorade drinking. But other than that? You're eating the cafeteria 3x a day most days.

Which brings me to my next point. FREE FOOD! Yes, yes... it's no where close to free- in fact it's probably grossly overpriced, but you don't have to use "real" money while you're there, so it feels like you can eat for free. Just a swipe of that student ID and you've got access to dozens of options, all day long. Of course you'll have to master the art of taking food OUT of the cafeteria for later.... I've heard giant water bottles can be filled with fountain pop relatively easily. Just don't pick a clear bottle.

Less gas money. I know some of you went to mega-schools that I'm sure involved driving around to your classes, but at a small school? Forget it. You can walk the length of campus in less than 12 minutes. If you're lucky like me, you'll live, study, eat and work on campus meaning you stay skinny and your gas tank remains full.

The biggest wardrobe you'll ever have in your life. Don't have something to wear to tonight's basketball game? Just stop on over at your roommate's closet to double your options. Nothing working for you there? Make friends with as many people in your dorm as possible and soon your options will be endless. Just beware that when you do this, you're expected to open your closet up as well. You may not see some of your clothes ever again. However, this generally doesn't matter because you go home each Spring with a few "new" pieces yourself.
A social calendar. There is always something going on around the campus or even within your dorm. No stressing on what's going on tonight, check your campus email and random bulletin boards and chances are you'll always have something to do. No planning involved, just show up!

So let's hear it. Would you go back to dorm life or not??

  2. I LOVED THE DORM!! Seriously though- I loved my floor so much- we would go out as a whole group; which obviously made us super cool freshmen walking around in a group of like 20. But dorm life was amazing. I really would do it all over again.

  3. I went to a local commuter college, so I never got to experience the whole 'going away to school/living in a dorm' thing, I feel like I missed out!

  4. My college roommate is coming next weekend for a visit and has told me she's not packing any clothes so she can just borrow all of mine. I miss borrowing clothes SO much! Shared closets, uh the best. I definitely miss having so many friends just a hop, jump, and skip away.

  5. though I always got stuck with stupid roomies, I would still go back to dorm life and college life. I would love a do-over! I was actually just thinking about this the other day!

  8. I would totally go back to college. There's a few things I'd do differently, but then again who wouldn't? Besides, its much more fun than being an adult with all these dang responsibilities ;)

  10. Actually your dorm is really cute so I now see why. I am a weird introvert (at times) and I find cleaning theraputic. Except dishes. No no no. That just makes me want to vom a lil bit. Free food? More like bad food. I wish I had access to chipotle or something.
lets trade ready set go? jk I highly doubt if you had the chance to live college like this all over again you would want to !

  11. I never did dorm life but my sister did, there were definitely good things about it but there were yucky things too.

Noise in the hallway while I was trying to sleep, sharing bathrooms and showers with everyone, and roommates who were not well paired.

  17. I went to a community college so there weren't any dorms. :/ But I would have loved to live in a dorm, make new friends, and experience college life that way.

  19. Haha ahhh this makes me miss college! I would definitely do dorm life again but this time get a better roommate! Peter is visiting Tech this weekend and I'm so jealous!!! I'm going to tell myself he's really at work all weekend doing very boring and not fun things at all!

  20. i look back and don't know how i lived in such a small space with a roomie (and shared a bathroom with 4 girls)... but seriously, it was the best time of my life! and all of your points are true... especially the closet. i started dating the hubs my freshman year of college and was so thankful for a suitemate who was my exact size, we wore each others clothes ALL the time!

  21. There was something very nice about being able to pack everything that I owned into a car. It makes me think about what I really need and what is just clutter!

  22. I totally miss having someone else's closet to raid and also being able to just cross the hall to visit friends versus driving an hour or more to see my crew.

  23. I so miss dorm life, it was the best haha!

  25. I'd go back for the dining hall options and social stuff, the rest of it no no no. No cramped quarters.

  26. I loved college, ahh! but i don't miss the dorm. could have to do with my roommate tho!

  27. I never thought I'd miss living in a dorm, but you're so right about these things. I really miss the dining halls and just constantly having something to do. I only lived in a dorm for two years, then the next two years, I was fending for myself. I liked living off-campus, but the dorm was pretty convenient.

  28. Hahaha! I love this. We often say that our neighborhood is like living in the dorms, just bigger.

  29. 'free food' i was so amazed at college that places delivered food at all hours of the night. i grew up in an area that was too far out, so delivery was amazing..probably the cause of those extra 20# along with that 'free food'

  30. Take me back to college!! I miss UK every day. Loved it there :)

  31. The only reason I wouldn't go back to dorm life in a hot minute is those community bathrooms...I don't know if I could handle that again. They were baaaaaad at University of Miami!

  32. College...those were the good ole' days. I miss being able to nap during the day. I also miss living with my best (girl) friend (sorry husband). :) One of the things I strangely miss about living with my friend is watching shows together. Shows are more fun when you have someone to watch it with. My husband and I don't have the same taste in shows unfortunately.

  33. Yes. Especially cause I lived with my bff ;) But I also vote for the sleeping through your classes, if you wanted. And choosing to skip afternoon classes for campus sporting events, because you had the freedom to do that. Unless there was some stupid test ;)

  34. hahaha I love this!!! bring me back!!! What I would give to be able to eat Basco sticks at 2am again and not bloat up 4 sizes the next day!

  35. I miss knowing my neighbors and always having someone to hangout with, even if you aren't that close, no one wants to eat lunch alone!

  36. I miss college in general. Living with my best friends was the greatest!!! It didn't matter what we were doing. We could all be watching trashy TV and I was sooo happpy!!! Those were the days!

  37. I loved living in a dorm. I thought I wasn't going to get along with my roommate because that would be my luck but when I saw her come in with the same college team bedding as me I knew we were going to be just fine. We are still best friends to this day. Those really were the best days!!

  38. Love this post! I don't know if I would go back now, but it sure was fun while I was living it!
