Football Movie Marathon

Happiest of Fridays!!! Today marks a pretty occasion in my life: I have the next THREE Saturdays off work. THREE. IN A ROW! That's a rare occurrence in the fall for me so I plan to soak in all I can these next few weeks. Tonight Jared and I plan to have date night at the gym (you guys- I'm addicted) and then head home for a night of healthy eating and a movie marathon while we ice our sore bodies. ;) I hope this weekend will bring more happiness to us Bengals fan than last weekend's game did...
Us, before the Bengals ripped out hearts out.
Lucky for me -and you- my friend Gwen has some great movie recommendations for your weekend enjoyment. Not just any movies but ALL football movies. Gwen is one serious sports fan and even though we cheer for all different teams, I love talking sports (and trash!) to her. Be sure to check out her blog if you're a sports girl, an Ohio girl, or just love her unique blog name/design!
Hey there, football/Erin fans! I'm Gwen aka Gila Monster aka Gwen Coco and I blog over at Confessions of a Gila Monster.
Today I'm combining Erin's (and my) love of football with my love of movies and I'm giving you...

Gila’s Favorite Football Movies

This is by no means an all-inclusive list and I'm just telling you right off the bat that you won't find Rudy here. I've never seen it. Go ahead and call me a blasphemer (what a strange word).

Now that we're over that hurdle, on with the list, in no particular order:

Remember the Titans (2000)
I'm a huge Denzel Washington fan, so I was pretty certain I'd like this movie about integrating a previously all-white high school football team in the 70s. The movie also stars a young Hayden Panettiere AND Ryan Gosling plays one of the football players. You can see him briefly in this clip:

Favorite quote: "Don't you see the family resemblance? That's my brother."

We Are Marshall (2006)
Starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox, this is a tearjerker about the rebuilding of the Marshall football program after the 1970 plane crash that killed 37 players, plus coaches, fans and others. This clip shows a crowd outside the college president's office chanting "We Are Marshall."

Favorite quote: "The funerals end today!"

Something for Joey (1977 - TV)
You're going to have to bear with me here, as I'm sure a lot of you don't know anything about this one. In 1973, John Cappelletti, who played for Penn State, won the Heisman Trophy. His little brother Joey was battling childhood leukemia, and died in 1976. John (played by Marc Singer) dedicated the Heisman to Joey, as seen in the clip below:

As a kid, and a Penn State fan, I read the book and saw the movie and yes, it's also a three-tissue story. Last Christmas my mom searched high and low and found a DVD for me.

Favorite quote "I want you to score three touchdowns for me. No, four." (And he did.)

OK, enough with the sentimental stuff.

The Last Boy Scout (1991)
This might not really be a "football" movie but I'm including it anyway. Bruce Willis is here in all his awesomeness and Damon Wayans costars. It's a violent suspense mystery complete with the hero's child being kidnapped, and the on-field action is crazy and ridiculous. I can only include the trailer for this one because I don't know that there are any clips available without the F-word (in fact, it's used 102 times in the movie).

Favorite quote: "The sky is blue, water is wet, women have secrets."

The Replacements (2000)
It's funny how Keanu Reeves is so stiff as an actor but I do enjoy a lot of his movies. In this one he's a quarterback playing during a pro football strike. Gene Hackman also stars, as does Rhys Ifans, who also played one of my favorite characters of all time: Spike in Notting Hill. There's a super cheesy love story, but don't let that dissuade you.

Favorite quote: "Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory ... lasts forever."

Honorable mention goes to: Brian's Song (but I felt I had used the cancer card already) and The Blind Side (which I really love despite Michael Oher now being a Baltimore Raven).

Thanks to Erin for having me! Feel free to visit me at Confessions of a Gila Monster, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

  1. Nothing wrong with a date night at the gym...that's what I plan on doing too! Gotta get back into my groove now that I got the DR's okay :)

I just haven't been able to bring myself to take Mia to the gym daycare (gross) but it's getting too cold to run outside (saaaaaaaad day) so I'll have to suck it up and try putting Mia in the daycare!
