Erin Gets Fit

I'm sure you've heard the phrase "Tomorrow you will wish you had started today." Or perhaps this variation of it:
These statements couldn't be more true for me right now. I mentioned a few weeks back that Jared and I joined a gym together and it's truly transforming me from the inside out. We're getting at least 4 workouts in a week, sometimes a fifth one if we're really getting after it. Jared works out right alongside of me, and he is awesome. Excuse me while I brag on him for a few minutes- but seriously, I don't think I could have done this without him. Those machines are intimidating! Jared has been the best trainer so far, and he knows when and how to push me.

I'm starting to feel more and more comfortable in the gym… like I belong there. Like I am someone striving to be healthy and fit. Like I am someone going after goals with everything in me. For the past couple of years, I've slowly but steadily packed on the pounds and it's time to get back to the best version of me! Although it's only been three weeks, I am seeing the tiniest of differences. There may actually be a bicep forming, but I'll keep you posted. There are "before" pictures, but no way I'm sharing those until there is a legit "after" picture to put right beside it.
Best of all? I'm SORE. Every single day new muscles hurt and I love it. I love knowing I'm pushing my body. Jared might argue that I don't love it, when I've got tears in my eyes at the gym, or when I tell him (daily) that I think I'm going to throw up. But I do, I love it. I love being in a gym surrounded by sweaty people all working on bettering themselves -no matter how awful it may smell in there! I love the feeling of adding weights to the machine and reaching a milestone. This week I was able to squat 95 pounds and I tell you, I felt like a freakin' Olympian.
The protein I use!

Jared's gotten me hooked on protein shakes- something I never thought I'd be able to enjoy. In the morning I just add a scoop to my water and it's the perfect breakfast. Occasionally after a tough workout and after dinner, when I still haven't met my calories for the day Jared will whip up this "treat" that satisfies my sweet tooth.
-1 scoop vanilla protein powder
-Water & ice
-1 teaspoon cinnamon
-1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Blend it up in the blender and you've got yourself a delicious, protein-packed smoothie that feels like it should be a dessert.

Are you on a fitness journey? Any big goals for this year? I didn't want to be one of those people who waits until the start of a new year to get my health on track. There is no time like the present! Joining a gym has truly been a life-changer for me and I'm excited to see what my body will be able to do in another month, 6 months, a year. I want this to be a never-ending journey.

  4. I've always said that working out with Derek was the best thing that ever happened to me.even though we don't work out "together" anymore we are still at the gym at the same time and I love it, he's tye best motivator (even though I sometimes kinda hate it) especially when I don't really want to get up at 5 in the morning, he is always there.

  8. You're doing awesome! One of my favorite post-run or tough workout treats is a peanut butter cup protein smoothie. I just use a scoop of my vanilla protein powder, some soy milk, a banana and a spoonful of peanut butter and Nutella. It's divine!

  9. A very inspiring post! It is crazy what you start to like after you have formed a habit! I have been working out to DVD's in my living room 5 days a week since August and I am finally starting to see some changes. I woke up one morning and realized that I wish I had started much sooner! I am hoping that a gym opens up closer to my house so I can get in a better work out!

  10. Go you! So is the protein shake the only thing you are eating at breakfast? We use that stuff all the time but I usually eat an egg or the like to keep me going for the day.

  12. YAY! Good for you! I've recently come back to lifting weights and I do really like it too! Now I'm trying to get pumped up to add some intense cardio! Hopefully that will subtract a few more lbs! I like Spin class, have you ever tried that?

  13. This is just awesome! I'm so glad you are making the changes and loving it! Makes me want to join a gym but I would definitely need Peter there to show me the ropes! My biggest fitness goal at the moment is to run a marathon. I've decided I want to start training after I get my invisalign off so I've got a year to work my way up there :)

  14. Cinnamon in a vanilla protein shake is the best! Careful with the whey though...it's high in cholesterol.

  15. I normally look at protein shakes and my first thought is 'barf' but those ones actually look like something I would like. I love the first quote in the post - just the motivation I need to get back to the gym ASAP!

  21. I buy the premade EAS protein shakes from the grocery and find them just as good! They're really convenient if you're on the go often.

  22. Awww.. I'm so glad that you are happy with this journey you are taking and you are SO lucky to have Jared right along side you. I wish I had that. I would benefit SO MUCH from going to the gym but I just don't have any motivation. We literally have treadmills in our condos and I don't know why I don't go down there and get on them. I'm not a lazy person.

  23. I am on the second year of my fitness journey and have never been happier or felt better. I truly believe this has changed me more mentally than physically. Happy to hear you are on the right track! It's a very rewarding journey! There's always something to improve, some goal to meet, and something to be proud of. It's a never ending mission and that's what makes it so fun!

  24. At the begining of this school year (about 6 weeks ago) I decided to make myself a priority. I have been using myfitnesspal (a free app/website) to track my calories and my exercise. I am down 11+ pounds so far. It feels so awesome! If you join MFP, let me know, and we can be MFP friends and support each other!

  25. You rock, Erin!! I've been working out during my lunch break for the past week, and it's amazing how much more energy I have during the afternoons now. I hate it while I'm doing it, but the feeling afterward is the BEST :) It really is true - you'll never regret working out, but you'll always regret not doing it.

  26. Keep it up! I started gaining weight after I graduated from college and started a desk job, and getting married to someone who can eat absolutely anything and gain nothing doesn't help. I wish I had gotten on the good eating and exercise train way back then.

  27. I definitely think that having someone to go to the gym with you helps. Going alone is tough because there is no one there to talk you out of talking yourself out of going. I was the most consistent with going to the gym when I had a buddy who was counting on me to show up. Ever since our schedules no longer lined up so that we could go together my gym going is sporadic and very inconsistent.

Keep up the great work! Reading about your dedication to the gym is inspiring!
