Sweat is in the Air

I seriously had knots in my stomach. I was nervous. My palms were even sweating! Luckily, I had Jared with me telling me this was no big deal and that there was absolutely nothing at all to be worried about. We stepped inside and into the bright lights. The smell of sweat and dedication was in the air. No turning back now.

You guys, I did it. I joined a gym. For the first time in my adult life, I have an actual gym membership that I plan to utilize as much as possible. Jared and I joined a cheap $10/month gym and I think it's just what I needed for that push of motivation. Sure, some people can just run on their own, do workout DVDs, etc.... but for me? I really think being a part of a gym is going to be what helps me get my lifestyle on track.
We've worked out two days in a row.... and I can't even describe to you how sore I am. I haven't lifted weights since probably college (hello, 5+ years ago) and even then I didn't know what I was doing. Jared was super patient with me with the machines I didn't quite understand and when I was feeling intimidated by giant, sweaty dudes lurking near us. I've never been hit by a bus, but I imagine this might be what it feels like. If someone could have seen me trying to lift a blow-dryer this morning, they could have laughed out loud. My jello arms and chest gave up on that pretty quickly ;)

I'm turning to the blog world more and more for fitness motivation! Maybe you're one of those people that doesn't like to see work-outs and Polar watches on Instagram, but not me. I need to see other people who care about fitness and who are dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle!
  • People like Becky who loves to run and cheered for me when I signed up for my first-ever half marathon.
  • People like Katie and Kelly who love to cook yummy, healthy meals.
  • Elle who describes herself as 'former fatty turned fitness fanatic'
  • Or Amanda who is a dedicated runner and always posts great tips for us newbies like this one
The list goes on and on! There IS motivation out there and I want your help finding it too. Who are your favorite blogs/Instagram accounts for fitness and healthy food motivation? Also, if anyone has a blog on how not to cry while lifting your hands to answer a phone- let me know ;) This chick is hurting today.... in the best way possible.

  3. Yayyy! Good job :) That sore feeling sucks, but it's also a good reminder that you did something right the day before. I get a little pang of sadness when I wake up the day after working out and I'm not sore. Yesterday, I had the same problem you had - I went to scratch my neck and my arm could barely get there. Gotta love it!

  4. Congratulations on taking the first step. They say that one is the hardest. I'm also back on the wagon (home DVDs) but I think I'm going to start adding spin class once or twice a week. I am an ex college athlete and I don't remember being sore for 2 weeks straight ever, but it happened this go around! We can do this!!!!!

  7. awesome!! I tried the whole gym thing, I just cant do it. I really wish I could. I am one of those that would rather do it at home. I wish I could still run but my knees are so effed up so that is out, so yoga and walking it is for me (but we have a bunch of hills in our neighborhood so its definitely a workout especially if I take Breanna AND Molly...dog + stroller + hills= workout

  15. See if your gym offers an introductory personal training session! That way, you can have a trainer show you the machines/ weights and offer some tips for putting together a workout plan. I love the Jamie Eason LiveFit on bodybuilding.com!

  16. I'm just so excited for you and Kayla! I know you two will rock the half marathon - I mean it will have to be a good time since you two will be together and your men will be there to greet you at the end :) I'll be cheering very hard from Virginia!! One time I went to the gym with Peter at Tech and I was sore for like 2 weeks... Can't wait to keep cheering you on throughout this journey!!

  19. Yay Erin! Check out to see if your gym offers classes because they are a welcome change to your normal routine, once you have one set up. They will work other parts of your body like you've never known. Also track your stuff on an app like MyFitnessPal and you'll see lots of good things :)

  20. 2 days in a row, woo! Way to go! The gym atmosphere can be great once you get used to it. I just didn't stick with mine. :-/ But I think the fact that you and Jared are doing it together will help. Become each others biggest motivators. Make it fun somehow. Make little bets or something..free kind of things of course, to please S & P. ;)
I'm mentally trying to get my head back in the game too so I can get back into working out in some way or another.

  21. I'm so proud of you! That's awesome! I work out all the time and the big, sweaty guys still intimidate me, so don't worry! ;)

  22. Good for you! It will become an addiction soon. I love my gym time.

  23. Yay!! I'm so excited you joined and survived!! After a really hard work out it's always the hardest for me to walk down stairs. I always said when I danced that if I wasn't sore the next day I didn't try hard enough! I've got to start working out my arms...I got trained on carrying trays today and it was embarrassing how weak I am!

  24. Yay! I am trying so hard to get back in to the gym! We just started a little twitter support group for our little workout butts! You are totally welcome to join us! I find it best to stay motivated when you know you have others "depending" on you to succeeded! Good luck and keep it up! :):)

  25. Thanks for the link love! Also, don't feel bad about being sore. I consider myself pretty in shape, and I'm still crazy sore after doing weights. I can't even do a pullup! Lame. Here's my favorite arm video. I do this after a run (sometimes, not all the time). It's 10-minutes and has a timer in the corner. Feel the burn! http://www.fitsugar.com/10-Minute-Arm-Workout-Video-22959099
