Sally & Perkins: Dollar Store Date

Okay, okay, so this might not really qualify as a date, but when you're limiting your date night funds and focusing on getting out of debt as fast as possible, just about anything gets called a date these days ;) It's like if we call it a date, it makes it more fun.
Totally us at this point in our lives….
"Let's do laundry and fold clothes side by side while our iPod blares cool jams.... Date night!!"

"Our kitchen sink is dripping. Want to run up to Home Depot with me?..... Date night!!"

"Our totally nerdy, favorite magazine came in, wanna' spend an hour reading them? Date night!!"

Regardless of how unromantic those things may seem, we do try to tackle the mundane tasks of life together because truthfully, Perkins can make anything fun! Including the Dollar Tree. The Dollar Tree has been our little hidden gem lately and we'll fill you in on why. STUFF IS CHEAP! Who woulda' thought, right?! Now do we do all our household and grocery shopping here? Of course not- but there are definitely some things the Dollar Tree offers that you should be picking up here, instead of your local Target.
Food storage. I don't know about your household, but plastic containers and storage items seem to CONSTANTLY go missing. No, I am not looking directly at Perkins right now.... ;) With the dozens of pieces and sizes, and the trips to and from work all the time, we always seem to be short on these guys. If you've looked at them lately in most stores, they can get fairly pricey! Stock up on some from the Dollar Tree and save your wallet a few dollars. We bought a 3-pack of medium-sized containers for a dollar (duh) and they are the perfect size for lunches and leftovers.
Another item we love to buy here? Cleaning supplies. Another necessity of life that sucks way too much money out of your bank account. You can compare the ingredients in any name-brand, favorite cleaner of yours and I promise they match right up with the cheap stuff. We buy our kitchen and bathroom cleaners here at a fraction of the cost we used to spend on similar items. They work JUST as well.
The third and final thing I LOVE to pick up the Dollar Tree? Gift bags and cards. How often do you make a quick trip into Target for a cute bag and card and leave there $9 poorer?! It's crazy what they charge for some pretty paper! The Dollar Tree generally has 2-packs of gift bags for $1 and cards are always 2 for a dollar. You can't beat that- go stock up and have those on hand!

So do yourselves a favor- get over to the Dollar Tree and save some dollars! What's been your best find at a Dollar store??

  2. I love the dollar store too, i try and find holiday decorations, cards, gift bags, and plastic storage bins for organization in my bathroom/closets. I even bought a set of plates and bowls there when I was in college and still have them!

  3. Dollar tree has Mylar balloons already inflated with helium too! $4 for a balloon at Giant (grocery store) or same balloon for $1 at Dollar Tree? Umm Dollar Tree, please!

  7. Done, done and done. We have a dollar tree right next to the gym so I'll run in there for things all the time, esp Palmolive Dish Soap, normally like $3 at Target or Walmart, just a dollar there. One of my favorite things I find there are decorated wine glasses, you know, the ones you'd spend oodles on. I've gotten quite a few and they are cute!

Oh and my "Perkins" is guilty of losing things like yours. Today I had to make him a list of things to bring home from work because he just won't and he thinks we have enough to send with him daily - coffee mugs, lunch bags, phone chargers just to name a few things. My next step is to send him to work with girly items that he won't want to be seen ;) Let's see how much returns :/

  8. I frickin' LOVE Dollar Tree. There are so many little hidden gems in that place. I am totally with you on the cards and gift wrap - I was actually just there last week and stocked up on cards so that I have them on hand. These are great tips, Sallie & Perkins are so smart. :)

  12. Dollar Tree is amazing! The best find there, besides what you've stated, are balloons. No need to hit up Party City for balloons, go to the Dollar Store.

  13. LOL. Jared is the bomb.com

The Dollar Store rocks. I find a lot of cheap "crafty" things there for all my DIY projects.

Containers ALWAYS go missing in our house too. =D

  14. The dollar store is perfect for those types of things. I do find that some dollar stores are nicer (cleaner & better products) than others- they're hit or miss sometimes!

  15. food storage?! I didn't even think of getting that at Dollar Store.

  16. I have to disagree on the food storage thing... I bought some there a while ago to save the money BUT those things were cheap plastic and broke almost immediately. Plus, I don't think they were BPA free :)

I'm always scared of cleaning supplies... do they really work just as well?

Heck yes on the gift bags and cards. Also: shipping supplies! So many times I run into the post office to mail something and get totally ripped off on their envelopes, tape, etc. That stuff is a fraction of the price at the dollar store!

  18. Hahaha! I love this :) these are the kind of dates Tyler & I go on all the time :) I'd choose these over crazy expensive and fancy dates any day. They're more meaningful to me :)

  19. OMG! I saw this and almost died! I have yet still to send off your package because I'm lazy (I can't use the excuse that I'm "sick" because that was almost two weeks ago).. your gift can be found at the Dollar Tree.. HOWEVER, I happen to collect these little gems so we must look beyond this. I'm going to send you a picture of mine via email and then send yours off this week! Girl Scouts honor! I love the Dollar Tree-- it's awesome. My 70 year old father just found this store not too long ago and it's like he has been born again.

  20. Love this!! haha I love me some Dollar Tree or our local Mighty Dollar! Can be such a lifesaver! Somehow our plastic containers tend to disappear too... HMM! These posts are so inspiring, THANK YOU! :) We are on the process of getting rid of some & it's amazing! But I wouldn't cry if the debt decided to disappear from our lives all of a sudden either...ha! My husband & I aren't able to see each other as much right now, so anytime with him is a date! :)

  21. Dang, I obviously need to hit up Dollar Tree! Especially for gift bags and cards, that stuff has become so expensive and no one even really notices it, I feel like. I love the idea of making anything into a "date night." I'm always begging my husband to run errands and stuff with me, just so we can spend more time together. Now I will just have to explain to him that these outings are actually dates... and that he should also buy me a cocktail while we're out! ;-)

  23. You guys are awesome.
And I'm so glad to know you two support this thing of rice I've decided to call lunch today.
Fun fact: dumping hot sauce on it makes it seem a little more gourment. I smell a romantic date night dinner in your future. Let me know if you need a recipe.

  31. Love Dollar Tree! Did you know they started to accept coupons? I was able to score 2 things of Comet cleaner for $1 using coupons. I adore their cards. Thank yous can get expensive (6-8 bucks for a package) but I was able to find super cute thank you notes for a dollar. I have to check my store to see if they have those storage containers. My Perkins loses them all the time.

  32. Cleaning supplies are SO expensive! I hate buying them! Dollar Tree is definitely the wise choice for that. :) Thanks, Sallie & Perkins!

  34. Girl, I haven't had to buy a new bag in 2+ years! We're still rolling off the ginormous bag collection we acquired when we got married! Also, I am THAT person who saves all the tissue paper. I have a huge box of it!

  35. My mom taught me this trick years ago and its genius! You know what I've also discovered there are those great velvet hangers! For $.50 each, so much cheaper than other places!

  36. The Dollar Tree is my secret fave! There's such good stuff in there -- things you'd never think of but are pretty good quality! I was just there today, actually, and got a napkin holder, some pens, a little laundry bag. You can't get everything there, but there are really good things that you can save some good money on. I like what your go-tos are there. I also like getting wine glasses, some office supplies, and some kitchen stuff too (depending). Also, they always have glasses-cleaning cloths, too, and even some cosmetic basics aren't bad. LOVE dollar tree!

  37. My mother SWEARS by getting her wrapping materials---wrapping paper, bags, tissue paper, etc. at the Dollar Store! I mean its a great idea...who really wants to spend $ on something that is just going to get thrown away! It was also a great place to shop during my sororities big/little week, where we decorated our little's rooms. You always needed balloons, streamers, and goofy items to put the theme together...Dollar Store was the perfect place to go!

  38. I usually get wrapping paper/gift bags there. (I make my own cards) Kitchen utensils are another good thing to pick up - if they break, you're out a dollar...
PS: Perkins cleans? Does he giving training sessions to the rest of the male species on this? ;)
