Sallie & Perkins: Creative Date Idea

nerd couple student loans

Hey all! How are those financial goals coming along?? If you didn't get a chance to read about what we were able to accomplish in June, I suggest you start here and then hurry right back. Don't worry… we'll wait.

Sallie and Perkins are still trucking along in July, determined to do even better than they did last month! Unlike June, they did give themselves a small amount of money for fun/entertainment this month. $50. That's it though! Once it's gone, it's gone!

Being on a strict budget means that date nights and entertainment has to be a lot more creative. Luckily for Sallie, Perkins is as creative as they come and has been dying to share a recent date-night with you all!

If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you'll probably remember that Jared Perkins loves Christmas more than ANYONE. He's generally ready to put the tree up by Halloween and his Christmas movie collection is pretty darn impressive.

Perkins and Sallie have hosted Christmas in July parties in the past, but entertaining on a budget isn't always the easiest thing to do. Determined to not let that stop his Christmas spirit, Perkins decided to create a Christmas in July date for he and Sallie.
He pulled out a few Christmas decorations, strung lights from the mantle and windows and lit their favorite festive candle.

He even coordinated their movie snacks and beverages to be Christmas colors!

He cued up some favorites on Netflix and had their stash of movies ready to go. Perkins even let Sallie pick a cheesy ABC Christmas movie on Netflix as one of their marathon choices. (He secretly liked it!!)

They legitimately felt like it was December, not July! And they never left the comfort of their home. Only a tiny amount of money was spent on snacks, because you can't have a movie marathon without snacks, but other than that? A totally free, unique way to spend their Saturday night!

What's the most creative date someone has ever planned for you? How can you make date night unique and affordable this month??

  1. How on earth did you get sooo lucky with Jared? I think Keith would just stare at me like I am crazy if I did Christmas in July (in fact, I just asked him before he left for work and he just stared at me). I'm waiting to see if he remembers our "cotton" wedding anniversary on the 29th, which I don't know if he will honestly.

I am going to do a no spend but not until September. July is almost over anyway, August may have the possibility of having to buy school supplies (praying hard I get a classroom again) and the only thing I'd have to buy in Sept is a present for my Dad's bday so I think that might be the month to try it!

  6. SO FUN! I love the idea of Christmas in July party...when I was younger, my {extended} family would get together to have Christmas in July, since we never saw each other during Christmastime.

Y'all are just so inspiring! Andrew and I actually sat down and budgeted hardcore to finish paying off credit cards and start saving for a house next year. Andrew isn't quite as motivated as Perkins, though...so we'll be cheating a bit. :)

  30. This is the cutest date night!! We should celebrate Christmas in July because I was totally out of it for Christmas this past year anyway! (It's Mia's fault, she was only 5 days old... I was healing and sleep deprived and trying to figure out how to be a mom!)
