Stress & Small Things

My job stresses me out sometimes. To the point where I can’t think straight, I’m exhausted to tears and I’m probably not the most fun person to be around. Thankfully, I have my very easy-going husband to remind me that life is NOT all about work. I don’t know about you guys, but sometimes it’s hard for me to leave work, at work. There’s nothing wrong with discussing the day over dinner, but I need to be able to leave it at that. Often there are situations or upcoming events I’m stressing about and can’t seem to get my mind off of.
Last night I started making a list of random things that popped into my mind. Things that make me smile. Things that are SO simple, yet we would miss them if we didn’t get to experience them. Take time to think of the small things in life that make your day-to-day that much better.

************************************

Laughing so hard you aren’t making any noise
New socks
Walking through the door after a long commute
Visiting a friend or family member and seeing them use the wedding gift you bought them
Picture texts from friends saying “This made me think of you”

Puppies that practically wag their tails off when they see you

The first football game of the season
Making your significant other crack up
Finding one of your favorite movies on TV
The first time putting on a new item of clothing
The sweet old man at church that greets me with a “two-hand handshake” every Sunday
Books that you can’t put down
When someone remembers something small that you told them ages ago
Watching someone open a birthday gift you gave them

Have a little kid imitate something you do
Wedding invitations in the mail
Being the only ones in a movie theatre
Coupons/freebies on your birthday
Trying a new recipe and it turns out perfectly
Fresh haircuts

Yankee Candles smelling your entire house up with deliciousness

************************************
I could honestly go on and on. And that list didn’t take more than few minutes to jot down. Once I started, it was tough to stop.
Appreciate life today. Your life.

  1. Hi Erin! I just started following you! I love your list--I also get excited over nearly all those things. I LOVE getting pictures of friends' kids wearing the clothes I got them for their birthdays or something, it completely makes my day. And candles--yum! Do you use Scentsy? If so, you HAVE to try "blueberry Cheesecake" it smells divine and absolutely fills the air in the entire house!

I hope this week gets off to a good start!

  3. What a sweet list! I need to make a list like this one too. I am the queen of bringing work home with me, to the point of turning into pure evil when my husband sits me down and has me take deep breaths. Yes, like a child. What an incredible way to shake the crazy that work gives us! Something we've come to learn is that there is a time and place for everything and while I may have some nights with a ton to do, that shouldn't be the norm. At that point I need to reevaluate my priorities! Good luck with your stresses!

  4. When I recently quit my job to start another because I was so horribly miserable my then boss told me something that I will always remember even though it is so simple "life is too short to hate your job, it's just a job and it does not need to define you or your happiness" - I absolutely love your list of things that makes you happy! Sometimes we just need a nice reminder to get us through a slump! I hope you have an amazing week and are reminded of the things that make YOU happy!

  12. This is such a great list, Erin! Thinking of all the small joys in life really does make me a little less stressed - maybe I should do that now! Ha!

And isn't it awesome being the only ones in a theatre. When Brian and I saw a movie a few months ago it was just us and then there were 3 other guys in there (I was the only girl). It was empty.

  13. Um, I love this. I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR about work issues. Oh, if you even knew. And then I go home and rant and rave about it. So yeah, I'm learning to leave work at work too :)

I love your list! I have to make mental lists like that every day or I would lose my marbles. :)
